NY Closets: Michelle Smith

If there’s one thing that can make any outfit better, it’s a dog. Michelle Smith — a lawyer-turned-interior designer based in New York, enlisted the help of her pup Ingy to add that final touch to her Friday outfit in this week’s NY Closet. She’s clever that way, similar to how she repurposed her former work chinos into weekend-wear, made a courtroom-appropriate blazer seem relaxed with great jeans and transitioned seamlessly from day to night without making a magazine headline about it.

Smith’s style savvy is likely one of those inherent things, but man is it synergistic; the Louisiana native has worked on such fashion-tinged projects as Tory Burch’s apartment at the Pierre Hotel and Prabal Gurung’s home and showroom.

As for her own closet? Ask and ye shall receive.

Monday (day): At the office. I started the morning asking my boyfriend to take a photo of my outfit for Man Repeller. He looked at me funny and then told me my look was “so boring.” He added, “Isn’t Man Repeller supposed to be cool?” For journalism’s sake, I didn’t change.

I like to hope that all of my outfits throughout the week were not swayed by this task. Everything subscribes to my dress code: boring, colorless, no black. I like pieces that are pretty androgynous as well, but some of the shoes I wore this week were a bit of a deviation.

Vintage Levi’s jeans, Toteme short sleeve turtleneck, Church’s shoes

Monday (evening): At dinner. I rarely change post-work for dinner, but since I was chronicling looks, I thought I’d snazz it up a bit.

Vintage Levi’s jeans, Tomorrowland shirt — similar here, Manolo Blahnik shoes, Goyard clutch, Philosopheyes glasses — similar here

Tuesday: Today I had a photo shoot for ArchitecturalDigest.com. I’ve had this double breasted blazer since my lawyer days.

Stella McCartney blazer, Brock Collection jeans, COS t-shirt, John for Devonshire glasses — similar here, Dries Van Noten shoes

Wednesday: My mom and I went shopping at all the local plant nurseries to buy trees for my terrace. I wear this Organic by John Patrick slip dress every time I go flea marketing, plant shopping, or any other hot outdoor activity where I still want to look semi-cute. I tie the bottom corner in a knot at whatever height is necessary for the occasion.

Organic by John Patrick slip dress and t-shirtGravati shoes, Oliver Peoples sunglasses

Thursday: Today we planted all the trees and plants on the terrace. It was real dirty, so I’m going to spare you the image of me and just show you what I wore.

Forever21 t-shirt, Gyakusou for Nike shoes

Friday: Dressed for a long car trip and waiting for my ride. The chinos are from my lawyer days. The dog is Ingy, my best accessory.

Prada pants, Steven Alan x Clare V. shirt, Church’s shoes.

(On Ingy: DoggyStyle collar, Wagwear leash)
