Let’s start with the basics: name, age, and where you hail from.
Megan Harris, 26, Sacramento, California!
How did you end up in New York?
When I was growing up I had vivid dreams about traveling to New York or being in New York before I had ever visited. I always felt that this place would be where I’d find myself and make a living doing what I love.
Did you always want to be a model?
No, I didn’t! When I was in 4th grade I decided that I wanted to be a children’s book author and illustrator. Then a drummer and producer. Then a fashion designer and photographer. Then a few years later a teacher told me I should be a model and it wasn’t until then that I had even thought about it. (I’m still trying to do all of those other things though ?.)
Any idea what you’d be doing if you weren’t a model?
Right now modeling pays the bills, but my first passion is painting. I still paint as much as I can but since I haven’t put all of my time and energy into it, I wouldn’t be able to do it for a living.
Do you have any other side gigs?
Aside from modeling, my two friends (Tanzania James & Diana Byrd) and I are starting a business together called Beatnik Parlor. We’re set to launch the first week of July and will be making and selling artisan ice cream cones and ice cream sandwiches. My role is mainly the branding and marketing side of things for now but I’ll eventually be part of the production process. In such a short time I am learning so much about what it takes to start a business and I am so excited to see where things go!
Speaking of which! What’s your favorite dessert, and where is it from?
My favorite dessert is probably my mom’s homemade Caramel Crack Cake…it’s easily one of the best things I’ve ever eaten in my life. The caramel drizzle is the perfect balance of sweet and salty and the cake is so moist!
What’s your favorite and least favorite part of modeling?
My favorite part of my job is a tie between meeting other creatives and traveling.
My least favorite part is probably the fact that nothing in this industry is promised. I might work three days in one week and then not work at all the next month.
Tell us something weird about you!
Hmmm…there are too many weird things about me. Oh, one that everyone seems to notice right away is that I have abnormally long arms.
What did you study in college?
I studied Art History and Graphic Design at Sacramento State.
Do you have a favorite MR post?
My favorite post so far is probably the one where MR talked to 10 different women about how happy they are in their chosen careers. It’s really inspiring to me at this point in my life and I can strongly identify with the stories now that I have embarked on starting a business with my friends.
