The Daily Routines of Writers

In the event you’ve not read Daily Rituals: How Artists Work which is a fantastic compendium of the daily rituals of various creative personalities, get a head start on learning how the inspirational mind works with this extensive look at some of my (your? our?) authors care of incubator of profound intellect, Brain Pickings.

I am particularly keen on Joan Didion’s process, which starts the way mine may or may not, too.

“I need an hour alone before dinner, with a drink, to go over what I’ve done that day. I can’t do it late in the afternoon because I’m too close to it. Also, the drink helps. It removes me from the pages.”

Fine, we only have the drink in common but in my mind’s eye, that is enough.

See the full feature here then come back and tell us about YOUR rituals. We promise to reciprocate the request.

Very fascinating, I loved Maye Angelou- “Why would you use a semicolon instead of a colon? And many times over
the years I have said to him things like: I will never speak to you
again. Forever. Goodbye. That is it. Thank you very much.” – that’s awesome and hilarious. I can never say/speak as good as I write in email; not on paper – I think the hand to pen isn’t as fast as my brain is working… (I’m not a writer as they are, or as anyone who writes for TMR, but for what’s it’s worth I am in my own right I suppose). I would love to know your routine Leandra and anyone else writing for TMR.

I’m with you on that speaking vs. e-mail sentiment. I have the hardest time taking phone calls and everyone assumes its just my being rude which is not the case at all. I’m just much better with the written word. Re: my routine, wake up around 7:30AM, brush teeth, read for about fifteen minutes, get coffee, come back, sit down. Stay seated until around 6PM wherein i begin getting antsy. it’s not the most interesting routine but it’s mine, so there’s that
