The Subtle Importance of Tiny Luxuries (and Where to Find Them)
06.03.19

Everyone has that one thing. That one thing you can’t stop thinking about, whether it’s Jenna Rink’s outfits in 13 Going on 30 or the weird but completely endearing sound your mom makes when she sneezes. That one thing you can’t stop eating, like sad desk salads or Annie’s mac n’ cheese. That one thing you keep putting in your online shopping cart, like this skirt or this belt.

That one thing is the language of joyful obsession, of a burning desire to shout whatever you’re thinking from the rooftops of your mind, an urge to push your plate across the table and insist, “TRY THIS.” It’s also Man Repeller’s theme for June, a month when our various fascinations seem to glow with a particular sense of urgent enthusiasm, warmed by the light and delight of summer’s debut.

To kick things off, I asked my fellow colleagues to tell me that one thing they consistently indulge in — a tiny luxury with a big emotional ripple effect. Read their answers below, share yours in the comments, and feel free to include any ideas for stories you’d like to see during That One Thing month on Man Repeller.

Blomus Fig Candle, $12.99

Picked by: Elizabeth, Market Strategist

Why? Honestly, any candle that you find to smell amazing and give you sensory ASMR is a luxury. I have a hefty candle collection — mostly ones I’ve acquired as samples or gifts — but this one has a fig smell which is my absolute favorite. It reminds me of a hotel I stayed at in Paris when I was young and smell memory is real!

It makes me feel: Relaxed, luxurious, cleansed and, somehow, more put-together.

Aesop Resurrection Aromatique Hand Balm, $27

Picked by: Gyan, Managing Editor

Why? I’m obsessed with Aesop. I’m obsessed with the fact it, like me, is Australian and the fact that it’s somehow found its way into all the fanciest restaurants and hotels in the US. I have a few Aesop products at home but my favorite is this mandarin rind, rosemary leaf, and cedar atlas (!!!) hand cream, which I literally carry everywhere. (I also keep one next to my bed.) The packaging is the cherry on top that makes me feel a-okay with spending this much on hand cream.

It makes me feel: At least 10 times fancier than I actually am.

Kuumba International Incense in “Sweet Rain,” $8

Picked by: Haley, Deputy Editor

Why? I first smelled this incense burning in my brother’s apartment — it smelled like fresh laundry, unlike any incense I’d smelled before. He ended up buying me a pack a few months later (the best brother), and I’ve been burning them sooooo slowly ever since, not wanting them to run out.

It makes me feel: Like a freshly-showered bunny rabbit wrapped in a blanket.

Torres Black Truffle Potato Chips, $6.42

Picked by: Mallory Rice, Executive Editor of Snax

Why? I always keep a handful of my favorite snacks stocked at my apartment for when friends drop by—a true marker of adulthood, I like to think!—and these truffle chips are the exclamation point on any spread. People don’t eat them, they inhale them (while they talk about how they can’t stop eating them). Sometimes I even buy extra so that I can give those who become truly addicted a bag of their own.

It makes me feel: Like I am effortlessly hosting guests at my summer home in Majorca or something

Chanel Coco Rouge Baume, $38

Picked by: Emily Zirimis, Visual Manager

Why? I’ve purchased many lip balms throughout my life — from Lip Smackers to Kiehls to Carmex, but I took the risk and invested in something a bit pricier, in favor of treating my lips to something that wouldn’t make them peel or dry out, and for me, it paid off! I love the scent and texture of this product. I use it every single day, and while small and arguably insignificant in the grand scheme of daily essentials, this small item brings me great joy every day.

It makes me feel: Moisturized and fancy

Matcha Latte With Oat Milk From Cha Cha Matcha, $5.72

Picked by: Harling Ross, Fashion Director and Brand Strategist

Why? Because there are only so many things you have to look forward to every single day, consistently, without fail, and my daily trip to procure a beverage from Cha Cha Matcha is one of them.

It makes me feel: Like I’m drinking a highly functional milkshake.

Anthropologie Quarra Nut Bowl, $10

Picked by: Starling Irving, Office Coordinator

Why? These teensy nut bowls transform regular ole ice cream into a dainty dessert. I love having friends over for dinner, and these bowls make two scoops of ‘scream go a long way (particularly great because ice cream ain’t cheap!). Pop a mint leaf on top for full effect.

It makes me feel: Like a hostess with the mostest

Tom Ford Shade & Illuminate Highlighter & Shader Duet, $85

Picked by: Andrea Araujo, Director of Client Services + Production

Why? I’m pretty low key with hair and makeup, but I’m kind of obsessive about blush/bronzer/highlighter. I prefer creams over powders and absolutely no shimmer. This magical palette is *the one.* You can go crazy with it for a sculpted lewk, or just skim it on for a natural vibe. It’s the perfect not-too-warm, not-too-cool shade. Oh and it doubles as eyeshadow! I also can’t resist the practicality and convenience of a palette. Ok I’m done!

It makes me feel: Instantly put-together
