Celeb Look of the Week: I Have a Theory About Bella Hadid
03.08.19

Welcome to Celeb Look of the Week! An MR column wherein one member of our editorial team, once a week, waxes poetic about one recently worn celeb outfit they can’t stop thinking about. Leandra kicked things off with an ode to Alexa Chung’s February footwear, then Emma explored why she loves “Tribeca” Tracee Ellis Ross, and this week, Harling’s pick comes with a hypothesis free of charge.

The most satisfying activity in the world (besides removing a stubborn popcorn kernel from between my teeth after extended effort) is issuing unprovable, albeit passionate, hypotheses based on nothing more than gut instinct. Here is my latest: Bella Hadid has been watching Friends, and she is inspired by Monica Geller’s style.

Like I said, this hypothesis is entirely gut-based (though conceivable given that everyone and their uncle seems to have watched the prolific 90s sitcom not once but multiple times), and I don’t know Bella’s life, but I do know that the outfit she was photographed wearing last week — a fitted, short-sleeved khaki jacket worn as a top with belted high-waist khaki corduroys, white sneakers and a stretchy black headband looks like it just walked right out of Central Perk circa 1998.

Her outfit has that distinctive yet somewhat indefinable quality of a get-up that nods to the 90s while existing in 2019 — a double-breasted jacket that looks like something you might have found in your mom’s childhood basement and brought to the tailor for a more nipped-in aesthetic; schlubby trousers rendered in corduroy instead of wool or polyester; and a vintage-looking belt that is basically identical to the one Monica wears in “The One With the Blackout”:

I’m really enjoying this subtly nostalgic aesthetic for Bella, partly because it is getting me in the mood for spring (I haven’t seen a bare elbow in months), but also partly because it’s so simple to recreate (I’m not going to say the #stickofbutter hack is in full effect here, but I’m also not not going to say it, if you know what I mean). You could easily concoct a similar ensemble from the existing contents of your wardrobe, but if you’re looking for more identical components may I suggest scoring yourself this vintage Valentino number from The RealReal for $105? Or this one from Yigal Azrouël for $130? As for corduroy trousers, these ones from Ganni are on sale for 30% off. And finally, Amazon is chock full of stretchy black headbands — heck, buy a 4-pack! It’s $10 and will arrive on your doorstep in 24 hours. Instant Bella — or should I say Monica?
