A Wallet-Friendly Version of Meghan Markle’s $12,000 Earrings
03.04.19

As I confessed at the end of last year, I have been fully converted into a keen observer of whatever Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton happen to be wearing on a given day. I am deeply curious about how their sartorial choices can convey any number of strategic initiatives, from international diplomacy to shaping their perception in the public eye. That being said, I’ve never identified with the urge to actually copy their outfits or individual belongings — never, that is, until earlier this week when I found myself digitally immersed in a vortex of Meghan Markle’s earlobes.

Let me explain. I was minding my own business, casually surfing Instagram, when I came across a photo of Meghan taken at a recent engagement in Morocco. I gave it my usual once-over, intrigued by her decision to wear another look designed entirely by one brand (Dior caftan, Dior shoes, Dior clutch) on the heels of doing the same thing (with Valentino pieces) the day prior. I was about to move on when I was distracted by something shiny: a gleaming speck that sparkled near Meghan’s face. I pinched my fingers and zoomed in. It was an earring, but it was also more than an earring. It was the exact earring I’d been loosely envisioning in my head ever since recently deciding that dangly baubles are no longer my thing: a riff on a diamond stud, classic but not too classic, small enough to qualify as understated but big enough that they wouldn’t go unnoticed underneath a pile of hair.

The only problem? Upon further research, I discovered that the earring — and its corresponding half — cost a grand total of $12,000. Not without reason, seeing as they are made of 2.15ct diamonds set in 18k white gold, but still. Definitely more than the average sad desk salad.

I wasn’t particularly ruffled by this revelation, however. I am literally in the business of unearthing very specific fashion items online — usually for photo shoots I’m styling, but there’s no reason the market-sleuthing skillset I’ve developed as a result can’t home in handy for personal shopping endeavors, right? Rhetorical question. I’ve already initiated a full one-woman search party on my go-to wallet-friendly retailers.

Amazon proved to be a veritable bastion of options, including this more-than-studly XXL stud, this teardrop guy, and this curvaceous contender. All of these are under $26, and I’m no mathematician, but that’s a lot less than $12,000. Moving on to Etsy, for an under-$50 price point, I really enjoy these and these for cool cluster stud options. And finally, if you’re willing to spend a little more, these from Brooks Brothers are particularly similar in shape to Meghan’s, as are these from Fallon.

Et voila. Duchess-worthy earrings at a normal-gal-about-town price. Any other royals fashion shopping missions you’d like to embark on together? Let me know in the comments.
