The ratio of how much attention shoes receive during fashion month to how much they are delivering in terms of surprise and delight is sorely askew. I get it — the clothes, especially in the context of a runway show, are the main event, and shoes can be hard to see unless you’re seated front row or religiously zooming in on Vogue.com. But when and if you do take a closer look, it’s clear they are far from an afterthought. Many of them are close to works of art, and all of them are indicative of the trends that will be carrying us (quite literally) from place to place in six months’ time. Ergo, to give the shoes of Fall/Winter 2019 the recognition they deserve, Man Repeller compiled a slideshow of the very best. Keep scrolling for a breakdown of eight exciting footwear trends coming our way — plus corresponding shopping links in case you want to get a head start. The full slideshow is waiting for you at the bottom.

1. Acidic Princess Pumps

Over the past couple of years we have witnessed the rise of princess shoes on fashion’s trend-o-meter: mules and pumps rendered in petal pink or fuchsia satin and encrusted with rhinestones. This season, they’re keeping the rhinestones but adding in some chic corrosion courtesy of slime green, edgy hardware, monster fuzz and other miscreant delights.

2. Glam Hiking Boots

I’ve said it once (in private, to myself) and I’ll say it again (in public, on the internet): après-hike is going to be the successor to après-ski. I’ve seen it brewing already with bungie cord belts, utility jackets and safari hats galore, and now shoes are following suit with enough glamorous hiking boots on the runways to start a disco campfire.

3. Over-the-Knee Showstoppers

Not only are over-the-knee boots back, but they are back with one of the loudest bangs I’ve ever witnessed. Whether brightly saturated or lined with what looks like the tangible equivalent of Cloud 9, these boots are the thing to wear when statement-making is high up on your agenda.

4. A New Take on the Sock-Shoe Hybrid

Sock boots came, saw and conquered the zeitgeist, only to subsequently fade into the ether as all delightfully gimmicky trends are wont to do. This season, there’s a new iteration in town, and they’re reshaping conceptions of what shoes a sock can canoodle with — not just boots that hit at the ankle, but also those that creep up your calf — and clogs!

5. Square Toes Akimbo

Left to right: Proenza Schouler Fall/Winter ’19, Marni Fall/Winter ’19, Maison Martin Margiela Fall/Winter ’19, Bottega Veneta Fall/Winter ’19

Spread out your toes inside this season’s most accommodating silhouette, a geometric shape conducive to all manner of walking, wiggling and tapping, not to mention an excellent retort to the old adage, “be there or be square.” Because why can’t you be both?

6. Fancified Ankle Boots

Left to right: Versace Fall/Winter ’19, Sacai Fall/Winter ’19, Prabal Gurung Fall/Winter ’19, Louis Vuitton Fall/Winter ’19

Ankle boots haven’t trended hard since 2015 but these tricked-out versions have all the necessary spice intact to revive something that started to taste bland. From fish-scale sequins to multicolored basket weave, there’s a fancy ankle boot coming for each and every personality, astrological sign and/or mood.

7. Space-Age Rain Boots

Left to right: Tod’s Fall/Winter ’19,  Jacquemus Fall/Winter ’19

The rain boot-esque shoes on the runways these season are exactly what I might imagine people would wear on Neptune in the year 2200. They have a cool, futuristic quality to them that effectively counteracts the innate drawback of wearing rain boots in the first place: a blatant surrender to the demands of practicality.

8. Super Chunky Heels

Left to right: Stella McCartney Fall/Winter ’19, Miu Miu Fall/Winter ’19, Marni Fall/Winter ’19, Simone Rocha Fall/Winter ’19, Alexachung Fall/Winter ’19, Dries Van Noten Fall/Winter ’19

This season’s chunk is some of the chunkiest I’ve ever had the pleasure of digesting — tall, teetering and worthy of the most decadent chocolate chip cookie. Let your finest ankle-strengthening exercises commence.
