A Memorable Red Dress, Head-to-Toe Knit, and Other Cyber Monday Deals
11.26.18

Instead of springing forth come January in the form of New Year’s Resolutions, my personal resolve tends to manifest during the month prior. Maybe because December is my birthday month and thus the source of copious existential pondering about past, present and future me, or maybe because being surrounded by its customary seasonal influx of joy (you know, the kind that glimmers on the periphery of family gatherings, or shoots icily through your nostrils every gust of air that carries the scent of first snows and the adrenaline of final work deadlines). Regardless, I know that December is when I feel the most ambitious, the most open to change, the most eager to explore, which is probably why my Instagram bookmark folder is chock full of festive winter outfit ideas that fall, in some way or another, outside my usual sartorial comfort zone.

Given that today is Cyber Monday, the second illustrious trombone in sale season’s kickoff symphony following Black Friday, it seems like a fertile opportunity to investigate the possibility of recreating said festive winter outfit ideas to the tune of a hefty discount. Keep scrolling to see where I landed on each (and apologies in advance to both of our wallets — the sales are G-O-O-D this year).

1. Head-to-Toe Knitwear (Including a Sweater as a Belt)

I tend to shy away from the idea of going balls-to-the-wall with knits for a number of reasons, such as the fear of looking like a kid whose parent overdressed them for a chilly day at the playground, but this outtake from a Vogue Russia editorial has me thoroughly hooked. Both outfits presented in the photo offer a compelling method for balancing the proportions of a thick winter sweater without necessarily opting for something super structured underneath: belt it with another thick winter sweater, OR pair it with a knit skirt in a streamlined silhouette and contrasting texture. There are a bunch of A+ statement sweaters on sale at Shopbop right now (which, for what it’s worth, is offering an additional 30% off sale with the code WOW18 at the moment), including this polo-esque one and this one that would look so cool tied around it. If you want to go the knit skirt route, too (I’m basically talking at myself, because I’d like to try both), consider this Simon Miller dress with this sweater worn over it. Purple is an underutilized festive holiday color, in my opinion.

2. A Plaid Blazer, Two Ways

Don’t you just love these two-outfits-for-the-price-of-one Instagrams!? In this case we have the privilege of witnessing two ways to wear a plaid blazer, both of which I adore and neither of which I’ve ever tried before. The main components of the first, a pencil skirt paired with a white button-down (buttoned all the way up!), white tights and white pumps can be easily created by means of Net-a-Porter’s sale section. I’m particularly wild about the idea of wearing this plaid Tibi blazer with this faux patent-leather pencil skirt from ALEXACHUNG and these Ganni slingbacks.

If you’re keener on the second scenario, consider these matching plaid trousers, this turtleneck and this cross-body bag.

Both outfit options are accessorized with gloves and thank goodness for that, because I’ve been looking for an excuse to purchase this ruffled pair on sale at YOOX.

3. Form-Fitting Tie-Dye With White Boots and Orange Hoops

I am an internationally established fan of year-round tie-dye, but I’ve never worn it in a slinky, evening-appropriate iteration and Paloma Esser’s iteration has me itching to try. I’ve been eyeing this Altuzarra tie-dye/check combo dress for a while now, and while it’s still pricey, it is now a whopping 70% off on MATCHESFASHION.com. Since it’s shorter I would pair it with knee-high boots instead of ankle (maybe these?). As for the hoops, these Cult Gaia ones look pretty supercalifragilistic.

4. A Lesson in Staying Warm and Looking Fun at the Same Time

I am a huge admirer of Jenny Walton’s ability to turn utilitarian circumstance into mind-bogglingly chic outfit opportunities (she even looks great walking to SoulCycle, as evidenced by her Instagram Stories), and this winter-appropriate ensemble is the perfect example. I’m not the most skilled at marrying functionality with my ideal aesthetic, so when I see someone doing exactly that in a way that speaks to both my personal style and my desire for winter warmth and comfort, I take note with fiendish enthusiasm. Who would have thought pairing a gold accordion skirt with a white lace-inset blouse, a brown teddy coat, a red beanie and lace-up boots would look so great?! It just so happens I found the perfect gold accordion skirt on sale at Nordstrom. And once I did, I went looking for a teddy coat to accompany it and found the perfect one for $89. If that’s not holiday kismet I don’t know what is. Here’s a nice lace-inset blouse, beanie (not red but it’s $15 and has the perfect cuff) and lace-up boot option — all from the gift that keeps on giving i.e. Nordstrom’s sale section — while we’re at it.

5. The Perfect Red Party Dress

Last but not least, the perfect red party dress. I used to never buy red items because my skin has a natural pinkish tint and I blush easily, but I decided I actually really love the color (especially deep, bluish hues) and those are silly reasons for not accommodating my desire to wear it. There are soooo many good ones on sale right now (I’ve literally just been going straight to the dresses in each sale section and filtering them by color). My favorites include this one from Topshop (on sale for $29!), this one from Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini, this one from Stella McCartney and this one — for more of a significant investment — from Khaite.

What holiday outfit identities are you adventuring into this season!??? What Cyber Monday sales are you shopping? Let’s have a kiki in the comments.
