Sorry to Be So Earnest But: What Are You Actually Thankful For?

Hello, hello and good evening! Whether you’re taking a break from a four-hour Friendsgiving charades game, dodging questions from your uncle about why you’re still single or just having yourself a regular-ass Thursday, I’d like to take a moment to talk about gratitude.

I’m not going to go full self-help on you, but around this time last year, my grad school advisor said something that’s stuck with me and really helped color my year: “You’re going to have headwinds and tailwinds, that’s life. Know that nothing is permanent and those tailwinds are there to help you when things get rough.” I’m paraphrasing, but as a naturally anxious person who is inclined to look a good thing dead in the eyes and ask it when it’s going to leave, focusing on being grateful for the good things while they’re there, while still acknowledging that they’re temporary, has helped me become slightly more chill.

So in that spirit, I wanted to ask: What are you grateful for today? I am grateful that I have the kind of people in my life that make me full belly laugh at least twice a day. That I have a family I look forward to seeing. That there are three orange tabby street cats in my neighborhood that couldn’t care less about me. That my coworkers don’t shame me for ordering hot chocolate at our coffee shop downstairs. That I can live a life full of kindness.

Hop in the comments to give a little virtual hug to whatever it is that warms your heart day to day. Nothing too big, nothing too small.

Oh and hey, I’m thankful you’re here.
