We are not the cutest of creatures on this planet, I am sorry to admit — there’s no way to compete with the axolotl. We are, however, creatures of habit. If you ever wake up sucking your thumb as an adult then you know what I mean!!!
I love the concept of habits. Life is so messy and wild that its nice to know there are certain processes so ingrained in us we’re able to do them without thinking. During the busiest of times, autopilot can be the one thing that gets us from A to B without thinking, so that we can instead concentrate on the trickier parts of the alphabet — the ones we’re less familiar with.
(What are some of these don’t-have-to-think-habits for you? Going to the gym? Making your morning coffee? Getting dressed? Commuting?)
I also find it supremely satisfying that we have control over habits. In theory, they can be both learned and unlearned. Though our will, focus and perseverance to stick with the learning and unlearning of a habit is another story, it’s an empowering concept to think that old dogs can, in fact, master a new art. It’s comforting to know that we can break that which no longer serves us — or that which never has served us. It’s not always easy, and sometimes it can take an entire community, but the fact that it’s not impossible makes it technically surmountable.
