A French Apartment That Makes the Case for Casual Chandeliers
02.28.18

In this special “Love Month” edition of Real Cool People, Real Cool Apartments, we check out the Nice apartment of Man Repeller community members Bjarni Breidfjord and James Pouliot. Our intentions behind the creeping: to learn what they’re all about. As with clothes, the way you decorate a room expresses your personality. In its most ideal form, it signals to guests how you interpret yourself. Take a peek into their home and brains, and meet them in the comments.

Names:

Bjarni Breidfjord & James Pouliot

Location:

We live between Paris and the South of France. These photos were taken in our apartment in Nice.

What do you do?

James is a photographer @boywithnofashion and I (Bjarni) am an interior architect @luxoria_interiors.

How long have you lived here?

We have been living together in the apartment for seven years.

How does the area influence your interior design choices?

When you are constantly surrounded by beauty, it has an inevitable influence on your choices. The South of France has a Mediterranean vibe with strong colors and contrasts, while Paris, the capital of fashion, constantly inspires from a historical perspective combined with the buzz and innovation of a big city.

What’s your favorite thing about your home?

The light. The apartment has big windows on both sides which illuminate it at different times of the day. Our dining area is the center of the apartment and tends to be where we hang out, especially when we have friends over for dinner.

Do you ever work from home and if so, what’s that like?

We both have separate offices in the apartment where we work. The rest of the apartment is more like the “home.”

Did you have an overall vision in mind when you started decorating?

We tried to distance ourselves from any interior design rule or tradition. Our home is eclectic, a mix and match of things we like with an emphasis on modern art.

What did you think about when decorating?

It has been more add-as-you-go, but we still think about how things will mix when we are adding a new item. In the midst of all the eclecticism, there is still harmony to be found.

In what ways is your home a “love shack”?

We’ve lived here since we met and have many fond memories of the apartment, from good moments shared together to hosting friends and loved ones. When you live with someone, there are certain compromises you make with interior design. I think we seek each other’s approval before going ahead with any major decisions.

Do you have any “rules” in the home, like no working in bed, no eating on the couch…?

Normally we have a sit-down dinner at a designated time. I can’t recall either one of us eating anywhere else besides the dining table. Work is left for the office space, but apart from that, we don’t have a lot of rules.
