13 Black-Owned Small Businesses to Shop Right This Second

I’ve heard a lot of gratitude directed toward black women lately, especially in regard to our political involvement at the polls. Along with these “thank you’s” come questions about how to help. One way to show your support? Invest in black women-owned small businesses — yes, during Black History Month, but also all year long.

As the founder of Black Girls Who Blog, an Instagram account that highlights black women in the blogging space, I’m constantly discovering these kinds of brands on Instagram. Below are 13 of my favorites, from indie clothing labels to custom wrapping paper.

For the Online Shopper

William Okpo is designed by Darlene and Lizzy Okpo, two sisters who have been in the fashion game for a while. This season, it’s their striped tee and wear-to-everything slinky midi dress that have caught my eye.

Omondi, designed by Recho Omondi, offers a custom pullover that allows you to say whatever your heart desires (in up to nine letters and in the designer’s handwriting).

Melanie Marie designs custom jewelry. Her pieces range in price and start just under $50. (I personally want a nameplate necklace in yellow gold for myself. *Obnoxious wink.*)

Made by Malyiafounded by Malyia McNaughton, is a line of dainty and delicate jewelry, that will invite your edgier alter ego out to play (think ear cuffs, body chains and faux nose rings).

For the Beauty Enthusiast

Cleanse by Lauren Napier are the most luxurious wipes your face will ever meet. The individually packaged towelettes are perfect for flights, sleepovers and weekend getaways. I use them to remove makeup, the day, sunscreen, mascara mistakes and to prep my face before putting on makeup.

The Lip Bar, founded by Melissa Butler, is a vegan and cruelty-free beauty brand that specializes in lipsticks, liquid mattes and lip glosses. In my experience, you can’t go wrong with any of the brand’s stunning shades, but if you’re buying for someone else, The Lip Bar offers gift cards.

Mischo Beauty, founded by Kitiya Mischo King, is a vegan-friendly, cruelty-free clean beauty line of nail lacquers that come in some of the most beautifully-packaged bottles I’ve ever seen. You can buy the shades solo and build your collection, or start with a set of three (base coat, top coat and color).

For the Craft-Happy Artist

Unwrp, founded by Ashley Fouyolle, is the gift that keeps on giving. This made-to-order wrapping paper isn’t just great for wrapping (although the dimensions, 17” x 22,” are cut to aid in easier wrapping and less scrap paper waste), the prints work just as well framed. I just recently bought this “Girls, Girls, Girls” pattern to hang up in my bedroom.

Kashmirviii, created by pop artist Kashmir Thompson, makes practical, everyday items that are anything but ordinary. Lil’ Kim coasters? Check. A Different World clutch? Check. Maxine Waters wall clock? Add to cart, check out and reclaim your time, sis.

Debra Cartwright’s artwork is regal and relatable. Select from pretty prints or sweet stationary to send to your girlfriend who still smiles over snail mail.

For the Knickknack Collector

Coloring Pins, created by Essence Murjani, carries pins, patches and keychains that will send you down memory lane. Get into these nostalgic finds featuring Zaria (Murjani’s take on a black Daria), the cast of JAY-Z’s “Moonlight” video and more.

Effie’s Paper, created by Kalyn Johnson Chandler, sells novelty items that make for great trinket-gifts: travel and coffee mugs, post-it notes and notebooks, boxed stationery and wall art.

LIT BKLYN candles by Denequa Williams will make your home smell great and feel cozy. Keep the glasses after the candles run out; they make for great storage solutions.

Besides a couple things that I’ve wishlisted for a long time (looking at you, Doc Martens) and using gift cards I’ve already received, my shopping goal this year is to only buy from women owned/POC owned/local stores or vintage/second hand for clothing, jewelry, etc. I know some people do this religiously to begin with, but it’ll be a challenge for me to not order online from my usual websites. And better that my money is going to small businesses and not large corporations. So please, more things like this!!
