I Found Your Winter Uniform and It’s Hygge Personified
01.03.18

It’s not every day that I click into the website of a retailer and literally want to wear every item on the menu, which is why I’m still coming to terms with the reality that I wish to usher TorySport.com in its entirety into the confines of my closet.

This isn’t an ad. My obsession stems from the fact that I recently invented a new category of clothing in my head to satisfy the proclivities of my ideal January style persona induced by the recent FREEZING TEMPERATURES (!!!!!) we’ve been experiencing of late, and Tory Sport happens to accommodate it in spades.

The category of clothing to which I am referring is called “winter leisurewear” (I named it that myself, as is my motherly right). Wearing leisure attire in the wintertime isn’t exactly a novel concept, but I would argue that the opportunity established by athleisure for off-duty outfits to look chic paired with the precedent set by hygge for approaching coziness as both a feeling and a lifestyle primes this moment in the evolution of fashion to be uniquely fertile territory for a veritable winter style revolution.

Inspiration for the winter leisurewear aesthetic includes: Yohji Yamamoto’s Fall/Winter 1996 collection, the winter whites fashion editorial featuring Frederikke Sofie from WSJ Magazine’s 2016 March Women’s issue, Slim Aarons’ apres-ski photos, the Team USA uniforms Ralph Lauren designed for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and the following Instagrams of Tracee Ellis Ross and Yohanis Morgan, respectively:

OUTDOOR GIRL ~ baby, it’s cold outside

This mood board started to assemble in my mind around the beginning of December but only crystallized with the discovery of a pair of Tory Sport cotton cashmere track pants on MyTheresa later in the month. Doesn’t “cotton cashmere” sound like a place you want to live inside of forever?

The answer to that question led me to TorySport.com, where I mentally paired the cotton cashmere track pants with a fair isle sweater and fleece vest. About a gazillion other fantasy winter leisurewear ensembles quickly followed suit because the knitwear is sublime, the stirrup pants are a treat to behold and the puffer jackets make functionality look better than ever. It all looks fun, no-fuss and warm, and doesn’t take itself too seriously — important factors considering the impending slew of short days, long nights and impulses to hibernate.

If you, too, happen to be in a winter leisurewear state of mind, you can consider this a below-freezing shopping PSA. Speaking of which — Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa with Marshmallows retails for $5.75 on Amazon Prime.
