The Best of Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, According to a Selfie Fanatic
10.25.17

When Rihanna’s new makeup line, Fenty Beauty, arrived online and in stores at midnight on September 8th, the 91-product collection was quickly touted as one of the most inclusive beauty ranges ever. It featured 40 shades of foundation; those in the darker range sold out almost immediately.

“The first woman I saw put makeup on her face was a black woman — my mom,” Rihanna told Vogue.com, “and when I think of my customers, I want everyone to feel like they can find their color, that they are represented as part of this new generation.”

Miski Muse is one of those customers. The model, student, highlighter aficionado, pal of MR and expert selfie-taker was so effusive about samples she received that she agreed to try more from the collection and review her six favorite Fenty Beauty products for us. Read on to hear her thoughts.

1. PRO FILT’R Instant Retouch Primer

What it does:

Reduces shine and the appearance of pores, thus increasing the likelihood of your face looking more like glowing canvas and less like an oil production facility.

How I applied it:

With a beauty blender.

Why it’s cool:

For a shine-reducing product, it’s surprisingly hydrating, which is rare and much-appreciated by my combination skin. Keeping the drier areas of my face moisturized and the oily areas matte is key if I’m planning to wear a lot of makeup. I layered more makeup over the primer to create the full lewk depicted in these photos, but it can definitely be worn on its own for a more low-key, “no makeup makeup” vibe.

2. PRO FILT’R Soft Matte Longwear Foundation

What it does:

It’s like a (gently) blurring photo filter for your skin in foundation form.

How I applied it:

I watched a few different YouTube tutorials and reviews for different skin types and tones to see how other people were applying the foundation because a) I love YouTube beauty tutorials and b) I wanted to make Rihanna proud.

I noticed that Jackie Aina dabbed it on with her fingers and blended with a brush…

Whereas Nikkie of NikkieTutorials applied it with a beauty blender:

I ended up using a combination of beauty blender and brush because I’m an overachiever. Pro tip: a little goes a long way.

Why it’s cool:

It’s reportedly formulated with climate-adaptive technology that is resistant to sweat and humidity. I was skeptical before trying it but now that I have, I can officially confirm: this stuff keeps you MATTE. (Liquid foundation usually exacerbates the oilier areas of my skin, but my face stayed soft and shine-free throughout the day). It’s also surprisingly breathable. It almost feels like a second skin, and it’s very buildable depending on whether you want a light or medium amount of coverage.

3. MATCH STIX Matte Skinstick

What it does:

Everything from conceal to contour, depending on your skin tone and the shade you’re using.

How I applied it:

With a brush and beauty blender, under my eyes and on top of a few dark spots from blemishes.

Why it’s cool:

The formula is so light — almost “weightless,” which I know sounds like one of those fake words people use to describe beauty products, but in this case it’s not an exaggeration. I could barely feel it on my face, and it didn’t crease or cake at all. I normally stay away from creamy products because of potential slippage, but this one really stays put.

4. KILLAWATT Freestyle Highlighter

What it does:

Adds some serious shimmer.

How I applied it:

I used a brush to apply it lightly on the tip of my nose and the C-curve that swoops from cheekbone to above the eyebrow. Then I went in heavier on my eyelids for a more opaque color. My eyes kind of look like they were dipped in gold, huh?

Why it’s cool:

I was shocked (and delighted) at how pigmented the Trophy Wife color is. The sheen is blinding in a good way. It’s also long-lasting and stayed put the whole day without reapplying. I like that I can layer it when I want to supercharge the intensity.

5. GLOSS BOMB Universal Lip Luminizer

What it does:

Delivers liquid-y lip shine in a universal rose nude shade (apparently designated by Rihanna herself as “the unicorn of nudes”).

How I applied it:

A simple swipe over bare lips.

Why it’s cool:

It is formulated with shea butter, so it adds shine without drying out your lips or getting too sticky. It also smells AMAZING — like, kind of peachy? Whatever it is, I had to stop myself from eating it.

6. INVISIMATTE Blotting Powder

What it does:

Absorbs shine.

How I applied it:

I used a brush to dust it over my makeup, finishing off the entire look.

Why it’s cool:

It sealed my foundation and kept me matte all day long without making my skin all cake-y and ghoulish like other blotting powders I’ve used in the past.
