10 Shows I Can’t Wait to Use Netflix’s “Skip Intro” Button On
Graphic by Maria Jia Ling Pitt

If you’re a calendar traditionalist, summer officially starts on Wednesday, June 21. For the rest of us, summer officially starts when you’re sweaty and there’s no longer anything new on TV. In olden times, the onslaught of season finales would be somewhat sad at worst and a built-in reminder to go the fuck outside at best. But we’re in the golden age of streaming. This glorious break from regular programming and spoiler-dodging means it’s time to crank up the AC and binge-watch.

Other than the occasional panicked text from a loved one checking if you’re still alive, the main damper on any quality binge-sesh are the damn. opening. credits. If I’m tuning in to a brand new episode of SVU on Hulu, then sure, let the comically early ‘90s credits roll. But when you’re three hours deep into Jim and Pam’s will-they-won’t-they-even-though-you-already-know-they-will, repeating sequences and maddening earworms really kill the vibe.

Thankfully, the developer gods have answered our prayers in the form of Netflix’s new “skip intro” button. It hasn’t hit my boyfriend’s mom’s account yet, but if you’ve been blessed with the ability to seamlessly skip intros, here are the ones I suggest you disinvite to your summer binge-watching.

1. The Office

Intro length: 32 seconds
Why it must be skipped: The volume. Everything is always fine and dandy through the cold open, and you’ll find yourself mid-chuckle when THE BLARING PIANO PLAYING BEGINS. And it only gets LOUDER once THE HARMONICA KICKS IN. It’s a little less annoying if you’re watching on a laptop and can quickly hit mute, but I often communally binge this series via Xbox, which means physically getting up to turn down the speakers, only to turn it back up once the logo appears. Lord, beer me strength.

2. House of Cards

Intro length: 1 minute, 43 seconds
Why it must be skipped: One whole minute AND 43 seconds. Of buildings. Next!

3. Nurse Jackie

Intro length: 57 seconds
Why it must be skipped: This opening sequence makes me feel secondhand embarrassed and I don’t really know on whose behalf. Maybe for whoever chose this song — where did they find it, and most importantly, why?

4. Orange is the New Black

Intro length: 1 minute, 11 seconds
Why it must be skipped: OITNB has a unique blend of the volume issues we see with The Office and the length issue we see with House of Cards. I once read that Netflix purposefully created extra-long opening sequences for their original shows to allow for buffering time. These credits in particular aren’t exactly quieting my inner conspiracy theorist.

5. Sons of Anarchy

Intro length: 36 seconds
Why it must be skipped: All that word jumping makes me dizzy.

6. The Crown

Intro length: 1 minute, 10 seconds
Why it must be skipped: I have much respect for Hans Zimmer, but this intro is so epic/intense/haunting/scary that it makes me feel like I should be spending my time watching a three-hour Christopher Nolan movie on Netflix instead of a Netflix series on Netflix — and that I’m going to get it in trouble for it.

7. Friends

Intro length: 42 seconds
Why it must be skipped: Headache Central, USA.

8. Peaky Blinders

Intro length: 1 minute, 12 seconds
Why it must be skipped: This is filled with sounds so unsettling they give me chills, and not in a fun ASMR way.

9. Gilmore Girls

Intro length: 51 seconds
Why it must be skipped: I can only listen to something as happy, sentimental and heartfelt as “Where You Lead” so many times before I want to throw my screen out the window of my apartment. (Guess what I scored on Haley’s cynical quiz? Just guess.)

10. Twin Peaks

Intro length: 2 minutes, 34 seconds
Why it must be skipped: ^Yes, you read that correctly.

The volume difference on The Office intro!! I’ve been complaining about that for years.

    • BarbieBush

omg yes. It actually makes me MAD.

  • Voovoo

The thing about the Twin Peaks intro, is that I actually get it stuck in my head as though it were a catchy song..but I only get those two or three first notes stuck..but then my brain becomes obsessed with trying to recreate the pitch of them in my head, but they always elude me.. Bum BUM..bum buuummm…bum bUm…and then I get frustrated and actually have to go watch it to realize there’s nothing weird about those notes, and why do I always forget how they go?? But then I forget again..I may have a Twin-Peaks-theme-related mental illness.

  • Natt

I used to say the same about Twin Peaks intro, but now they’be shortened it and I miss it with every fibre of my being

  • Sonia

I don’t even like the intro song to OITNB and yet…I know all the words. Praise the Skip Intro button!

  • Anaid Chrietzberg

As much as I like Nick Cave, listening to Red Right Hand before EVERY single Peaky Blinders episode was enough for me to never want to listen to that song again.

  • kate

Friends and Gilmore Girls are my comfort watches and yeah, those theme songs are equally grating and horrible. I always mute or FF through them.

  • dayman

I’ve come to the conclusion that I’m a sucker for intros. They’re comforting and get you into the ~vibe~ of the show! So of course my favorite is the insanely long and arguably boring Twin Peaks one. Every time my boyfriend fast forwards through it I have a pang of sadness but I also feel too ridiculous to make him go back to watch it…only makes it feel like more of an extra special treat when I watch Netflix alone…holy shit did I just write that

  • Claire

The US Netflix version of Peaky Blinders doesn’t even have that intro!

  • gracesface

I’ve been skipping the Grace and Frankie intro – and it still gets stuck in my head. I’ve skipped the Gilmore Girls intro for years on the DVDs, it’s just tooooo much. BUT I will never skip the intro for seasons 3 & 4 of Felicity. This song has it all!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vl2wuCYnuRQ God I love it.

  • The sound difference annoys me so much in OITNB! All the wrong sounds are loud.

  • Diana McNeill

omg yes to Gilmore Girls intro skip. I have watched every episode so many times I can actually click the perfect place after the intro credits and just get on with the episode.

  • Ana

I’ll trade the Twin Peaks intro (I absolutely adore it) for the Full House intro. It’s just so long, and boring, and blah.

  • mary

still upset they cancelled Sense8 – the best show I’ve seen in years!

  • Áine Hegarty

Sometimes I like listening to the whole Twin Peaks intro if it’s the first ep I’m watching bc I like the music and it is so iconic, but yeah incredibly long. Kind of blew my mind the first time I realised it was still. going. on.

  • Cordelia

Kimmy Schmidt because that unbreakable dammit song gets stuck in my head (a fact right now, ugh). It’s only about 30 seconds so even if you click the skip intro button it still leaves the last dammit! So pointless…

    • Alison

Not if you dance to it! And then you have exercise built into your binge. 30 seconds of exercise, but still.

  • me

The House of Cards intro is FAB.

(of course, i live in DC and never get tired of seeing shots of my iconic, extremely photogenic (adopted) hometown 🙂

  • Maggie Lanham

I absolutely agree with Twin Peaks. GOOD LORD. Also, just want to say, I’m so glad to see your name on more articles, Erica! Love your writing!

  • Haley Nahman

lol erica NOTHING annoys me more than a too-long title sequence

  • ReadER451

BEVERLY HILLS 90210. It’s on HULU, but I hope they follow.

  • Christel Michelle

Funny story about the Twin Peaks opening. I am high key obsessed with TP. None of my friends are. I once came home so sleepy after a night out and passed out in my roommate’s bed. She and her boyfriend tried everything to wake me up, played loud music, yelled in my ear etc. Literally the only thing that woke me was when they played the Twin Peaks theme song! LOL I also generally can’t ever bring myself to skip it.

  • Lane Alves

To be completely honest, I get so hyped hearing the OITNB Intro (shrugs).

  • Lucy
