Will Yeezy Season 5 Dominate NYFW Coverage Again?

Fashion week hasn’t even started and it’s already gone viral.

Kanye West will debut Yeezy Season 5 during NYFW this month. On February 15th at 5 p.m, to be exact. As with past seasons, the media coverage of the show precedes it. His confirmed slot, which was announced via press blast yesterday, has already been covered by fashion, entertainment and music outlets alike: Vogue, Complex, The Cut, Fashionista, HypebeastRefinery29, Billboard, Spin, Pitchfork, GQ, The Fader, even Hollywood Life.

(And now Man Repeller. The irony is noted.)

It’s a tense time for fashion week to descend upon New York, the political climate being what it is. Lingering on many of our minds is the question of how the civic turmoil will register across the shows. It’s also a particularly interesting time for Yeezy to show; the coverage of his collection will be under as bright of a spotlight as the collection itself, especially after last season. We talked about this so much in the fall, remember? His recent hospitalization and confounding political affiliations are also in the mix.

Maybe this year will be different. He’ll be showing the collection at Pier 59 Studios, a venue familiar to the fashion crowd and a distinct departure from the unconventional drama of Madison Square Garden (the circus that was Yeezy Season 3) and Roosevelt Island (the shitshow that was Yeezy Season 4).

We may even see a departure in the clothes, which Leandra has always deemed “dressed-up Spanx.” Yesterday, Kim posted this video of North on Snapchat and just casually dropped that she and Kanye were working on a children’s clothing line. Kids on the runway? He’s also been hinting at Calabasas merch for about a year now, some of which is rumored to drop this Spring.

I don’t know. It’s all just rumors. Which is, perhaps, the point I originally set out to make: Yeezy’s reputation as a media storm instigator precedes it. We’re already falling. I just hope this season’s inevitable noise centers around a message worth pondering and involves not a single fainting model nor offensive casting call sheet. Maybe the most shocking thing Kanye could do is not shock us.
