Franchesca Ramsey — comedian, activist, actress and YouTube personality — wanted to be the first black Little Mermaid when she grew up.
She ended up working as a graphic designer who did open mic nights during during her off hours. She started making YouTube videos and blogging on LiveJournal, too.
The year before Ramsey moved to New York, she won a YouTube contest that put her on the red carpet at the Emmy Awards with a mic in her hand and celebrities as her interviewees. When her 2012 YouTube video, “Shit White Girls Say…to Black Girls,” went viral, she really began to feel things change.
Ramsey now has her own MTV series called Decoded, a show that aims to break down hard-to-understand topics. She has a dedicated following on Twitter, and was recently tapped by YouTube to be one of their Creators For Change ambassadors. “[M]y activism is intersectional. [M]y morals are non negotiable,” reads her Twitter bio.
