Today in exciting, wallet-affecting news, Mansur Gavriel — the New-York-based cult fave that might have single-handedly revived the term “it bag” — just announced it’ll be moving away from the traditional fashion calendar to show its collections in-season (as in, see-now-buy-now). That means they’ll be presenting their Winter 2017 collection later this year rather than next month. Cool! (And on trend.) But their announcement is about more than a format shift: In September, they’ll be showing ready-to-wear alongside the bags and shoes they’re known for.
“With social media today, the whole system just doesn’t make much sense to us,” Rachel Mansur told Business of Fashion. “It also feels much more exciting creatively to share the collection at the same time that it will be offered to the public.” Of designing a clothing line, Mansur said: “Creatively, we were always ready.” But, she explained, they decided to wait and make sure they were on solid footing before they expanded. “We had such fast growth with the bags that we felt that we needed to be operationally prepared. Now the time is right.”
Mansur and her partner-in-biz Floriana Gavriel have been nothing if not thoughtful in how they’ve rolled out their brand. “The duo famously spent two years refining their first two handbags — a tote and a bucket — before bringing them to market,” BoF reported back in 2015 when Mansur Gavriel announced its shoe line, which hit stores in spring of last year.
The meticulous, measured way in which they’ve entered new product categories is refreshing and likely a key contributor to their dedicated following. Which, by the way, is huge and hard to miss, at least around New York.
There are no sneak peeks of the clothes yet, but the dresses worn by the models during Mansur Gavriel’s Spring/Summer 2016 presentation were designed by the brand, so that should give you a sense of what to expect (see below).
