What to Wear This Week: Ramya Giangola
09.13.16

In today’s edition of What to Wear This Week, Ramya Giangola, founder of Gogoluxe, breaks down the mechanics of what she wears and why.

What are you thinking when you get dressed in the morning?

I am mostly thinking about what kind of day I’m having. If I have meetings and clients in town, I’ll likely get a bit more dressed, but if it’s the weekend and I’m with my family, definitely more casual…

Do you ask yourself any questions?

Mostly if I have to go day-to-night, then the look has to be able to transition.

Do you start from the shoes and work your way up, or clothes and then down?

I would say that I start with a piece of clothing, whether its a Rosie top, or Vetements jeans, or a Natalie Martin dress… then I do shoes, bag, and jewelry.

Do the pieces you choose to wear aim to say anything specific?

I just like to keep it all easy and comfortable, and to be me. My style is pretty eclectic and could really span a range of looks depending on the time of year or the type of day I’m having.

What’s a foolproof styling trick?

Sneakers with everything! They make dressy clothes more casual, and more sexy things less so. I’m not a super sexy dresser but I want to feel good and pretty. If I am wearing shorts, a mini skirt, or something off the shoulder that shows more skin, a pair of sneakers or flats really makes the outfit less va-va-voom and I feel more comfortable.

The one garment that never lets you down?

Natasha Zinko shorts, I’ve been living in them this summer and they go with EVERYTHING!!!

The one that always lets you down?

That’s so hard to answer… I feel like these days the garments in my closet all have a purpose and work for me. I’ve edited quite a bit so I don’t have anything really that lets me down in my wardrobe.

Your best shopping tip?

Shop by yourself. For me, personally, I do a lot better on my own to not be influenced by what others say or think.

What style (or item) of clothing makes you feel most like yourself?

Golden Goose sneakers.

Why?

They are just so easy and effortless and go with everything (see above). Also, I would say a cropped flare pant. I have them by the dozen from key designers and they are a style staple for me.

At what point in your life did you really start to come into your own in terms of personal style?

It seems to be in the last two years. I feel less concerned about how other people see my style, and more about how things make me feel. I gravitate towards items that are special and timeless and that I can wear forever… not just the IT item of the season.

What was going on in your life around that time?

Just growing up !

You’re shopping with a friend and they hold something up and say “This is so you.” What do you want them to be holding?

A Celine dress, Comme des Garcons striped sweater, Junya Watanabe trench, or a Mark Cross bag.

Would you say you dress to reflect your mood or to change your mood?

I would say mostly the way I dress reflects my mood: relaxed, easy, or more buttoned-up depending on the day.

Tell me about the history of an item you’re wearing — when and why did you acquire it and have you worn it during any particularly memorable moments?

Natasha Zinko khaki shorts — I got them this spring and I’ve been wearing them with everything. We recently moved from NYC to Los Angeles and we drove cross country which was amazing. I wore these shorts a ton during my last few months in NYC, and also on the road… so now these shorts have a lot of memories for me.

Do you ever feel like you’re in a rut with your closet? If yes, how do you get yourself out?

I actually hit more of a rut in the winter, as it’s so cold and so hard to be creative after a while. I have a bit of a uniform in the freezing cold, which is a chunky Celine sweater, leather cropped pants, and sneakers or shearling hi-tops. I seriously get so sick of this look by March, and am so ready to retire these items until next winter.

Where are your favorite three places on the Internet (sites, Instagram accounts, podcast platforms, etc.) to get inspired?

T magazine, Man Repeller (!!!), @designmilk, @chandeliercreative: my friend Richard is an endless source of inspiration for me. His view of life is amazing!

What are new brands that you have your eye on?

I’ve recently become obsessed with Natalie Martin after a friend introduced me to her… her clothes are perfect for my summer in LA and West Cost lifestyle. And the new bag collection from Tibi and Myriam Schaefer is incredible. I will be rocking them this fall for sure.

What’s the coolest thing you’ve learned in the last seven days?

That there are canals in Venice, California and they are so beautiful!
