Gloria Steinem has a fear of public speaking. Her mouth gets dry. Gloria Steinem.
Everyday-person-like-you-and-me facts such as these always capture my attention. They’re reminders that we can be bold and seek change despite our own trepidations, that while we may have neuroses and road blocks or no clue what we want to do in life — here’s another one: Gloria Steinem didn’t know what she wanted to do after college, either — we can still be great. No excuses.
In this very special episode of Oh Boy, Steinem talks to host Jay Buim about many things: social justice, writing, Donald Trump, modern politics, how she was the first woman at New York Magazine, how she eschewed marriage for an opportunity in India. She talks about how she discovered the women’s movement and how it changed her internal dialogue about external expectations, and she talks about progress — how far we’ve come, how far we still have to go.
“We have to be more patient, human, realistic to make change,” she says.
Oh, and fun fact: she has been known to rent airplanes to fly happy birthday messages overhead for friends. Amazing, right?
Just like Steinem herself and this episode of Oh Boy. See you on the other side. Come out swinging.
