YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME TO SHOWER. Not always.
Sometimes you’re too sleepy. Sometimes you’re too busy. Sometimes you actually did shower but didn’t get all of the conditioner out or the water was weird or it was super windy that day and for whatever reason wind tends to inexplicably make your hair greasy. (Does this happen to anyone else?)
The solution can’t always be a hat or dry shampoo. A fact of life is that one day, when you need it the very most, you will run out of scalp talc, and while caps, scarves and bucket hats may have their place on the beach and streets, there will be times that ask you to not cover your head. Don’t ask me why.
But I did ask three women their dirty hair loopholes. The old “how’d you get away with not showering for one more day” thing. Here’s what they said.
“My hair is really curly, and while I love it, I never know what’s going on up there. I tend to wear it straight as it lets me cut down my morning routine but I like to give my hair a break every now and then. When it’s curly, I wash it every couple of days. The longest I’ve gone is a week.
Pantene Pro-V Curl Perfection Moisturizing Conditioner is pretty much the only product I use when I’m wearing my hair curly. I don’t like the crunchy, slick look of gel, so when I don’t have the energy to give my hair a thorough wash and comb-through, I’ll dampen it slightly and use a quarter-size drop of Pantene Pro-V to control the frizz. (I leave it in.) Then I part my hair down the middle, smooth out my hair as much as possible and twist both sides into knots. For the few lone curls at the nape, I’ll pin them up with bobby pins.”
“My hair is thick and fairly straight. It’s the kind of hair that slips through clips and pins and sorts itself back to its original form after being curled. I often shampoo twice a week, but if I end up sporting more than the usual amount of urban filth, here’s what I do:
1. Make a half ponytail with a loose little bun.
2. Divide the lower half into two segments.
3. Braid both halves and fasten each with a rubber band.”

“I often wear my hair blow-dried straight, but it’s naturally very curly and very dry, which means I can go a long time without washing it. I rarely wash it more than once a week — the exception is some kind of intense workout class where I feel drenched after. Any time I go more than a week without washing, I resort to this hairstyle. What I do is:
1. Part my hair at its usual spot.
2. Take a chunk from the front and twist it away from my face, then use my mouth or a friend to hold it.
3. Repeat on the other side.
4. Bring both twists together behind my head and fasten with a sturdy barrette.
Raise your arm if you’re skipping the shower tonight! Yikes. Arms back down. But man, does your hair look great!
