Welcome, Welcome

Experience our re-launch, somersault if you have to!

Remember that show, The Swan? For the uninitiated, The Swan was a reality television show that aired in 2004 and followed the reconstructive surgeries of various “ugly ducklings” (don’t even get me started on the plot line, this anecdote has a point) who were in the process of metamorphosing into “swans.”

Now, I’m not trying to say that Man Repeller was an ugly duckling but I am suggesting that we’re looking a bit more swan-like than we did yesterday. So, welcome! Welcome! Welcome! This is the new Man Repeller. It’s hip, it’s with it, it’s going to support way more content for your reading pleasure and hopefully deliver double the giggles, double the tears, double the gifs, double the fun.

And with that, a few new features to note:

First, you’ll notice the sweet ass carrousel spitting content at you. It’ll continue to do just that. Click on any of the articles in there – either the picture or the text to the right – and experience the Man Repeller you already know.

Second, you’ll notice our new flyout, which is pretty much even cooler than it sounds. When you hover over “Main Posts” from the top nav bar, a magical drop-down-fly-out action will happen so you can see recent posts in the menu categories. Sift through via arrows at the top of the flyout, or go straight to the meat.  The rest of the menu should look familiar, with the exception of that little tab that says “Minor Cogitations.” Minor Cogitations asks the really hard hitting questions. See: this.

Continuing down the homepage, you’ll find two new boxes just below the carrousel. The first reads, “Best of The Internet.” When you click one of the three boxes, you’ll find a short blurb about a news story or sale scores or any number of cool things that we’ve deemed highly worth sharing. Next to Best of The Internet, you’ll find Manstagram, now including photo and video because the fun don’t stop at stills.

Just below that, the feed will resume, now featuring a sort function which will make navigating old content super duper mcnuper easy! Hooray! Simplicity! Utility! Bartleby! Humanity!

At the bottom of each page, an archive will be staring you in the face. If you click Open Full Archive, you will be greeted by a big fat calendar, chronicling all published content for your searching pleasure.

This took like, five months to execute so even if you hate it, just lie and say NIFTY! Kidding. Totally kidding. Feedback is always welcome. We hope you’re excited though. We’re pretty much peeing our pants.

    • (BAD) Blog About Design

Definitely agree. The site works better and allows for more interaction with your content. Yeah Man Repeller!

      Check out the BAD Blog…http://design-bad.blogspot.com/

  • ellefrost

Super! Although I’m having problems with the search button… was looking for more hilarious ladies who tweet, but to no avail! So sad…

    • Leandra Medine

Still working out some kinks! That will be fixed shortly

  • Milena Stoeva

Nice re-design! Like most experience, it might take a few tries to get comfortable with the new space, but I dig it! p.s. can’t wait for your book to get delivered to my Kindle, Leandra! If you can somehow short-circuit the process for me, that would be great. Otherwise, here I am waiting along for the official release with all the other plebes :p

  • Wow, this looks so dynamic! (I like dynamics) Also: since there are many more things to choose from now (because the new design makes their presence visible(r) and because they’ve been added), the site has become more of an adventure, which is great. I haven’t really managed yet to get a precise overview, something that occurs faster and easier with most regular blogs because they stick to the simple structures offered by their programs, but I love to explore (a feature I preserved from the sandpit we all come from: just let me dig and run around and I’ll be happy). I also think it is a good idea to offer an easy access to older posts (for those of us who like to re-read and re-think things).
Now … how about you stop peeing your pants? 🙂

  • It’s so beautiful! Love the small attention to detail, like the arrows on the carosel filling out with the picture. brilliant work.

  • Sharon Macklin

I’m at work, so I’ll have to check it out thoroughly at home. I do hope it’s iPad friendly – I hardly ever (NEVER!) use the desktop or laptop anymore!
Looking forward to your book – I went to Amazon yesterday to pre-order…thankfully they don’t let you order what you already have, which has saved me many times! I’m old (you are younger than my children), and my mind is shot to hell!

    • Kate Barnett

thanks, sharon! it should be very ipad friendly, but definitely let us know if any bugs pop up!

  • Helena

I miss seeing “collaging like it’s a sport” *tears*, but everything else looks nice.

    • Kate Barnett

oh! very glad you mention this. so, those posts are now in the “Style” section, but we had sooo many menu categories that the organization of the site was getting a bit crazy. but, i’m still figuring out how to make those easily searching, and tying them to future “collaging like a sport” posts. maybe just putting the feature name somewhere in the article so you can still search it. then it’ll be kind of like a secret menu…

k, i’ll get back to you on this one!

  • Michal

I love it! Looks a lot more editorial. I do wish you’d do away with the “read more” buttons. One too many clicks for me to get to content.

    • Alyssa Coscarelli

I agree. I was hoping the relaunch would do away with that excess click. *le sigh*

      • Kate Barnett

hi michal and alyssa, thanks for for the feedback! wanted to fully understand what you mean — what extra click are you referring to? you can click anywhere on the post previews to get to a post, the ‘see more’ just gives a little direction. do you mean you’d prefer the entire post copy in the feed from the homepage?

  • Lilli

Brliant! But can you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring back man getter to repeller!

    • Kate Barnett

hi lilli! it’s still there, just under “Style” and a bit more difficult to isolate. made a similar comment to helena above — we condensed the menu categories to make the organization of the site a bit more manageable, but i’m thinking of how to group those posts together easily now. will let you know!

  • Great job, I like every new feature especially ‘Minor Cogitations’. Commenting on your blog is always so fascinating, I look forward to following those conversations.

  • CarolinaG

    Love your blog!!!!

I’m posting looks from Los Angeles and accessories:

  • I love you all so much at ManRepeller, you make me want to be an even bigger man repeller. This site is freaking awesome, that is just got even awesome-r. Thank you for giving us laughs everyday!

    Your Friend, Jess

  • MsDenbi

The site looks great! Love the look and it looks really professional. Looking forward to browsing through the older posts.

  • Well done!

  • Amatoria

Question/Request: Is there still a way to see the full archive??? I was trying to catch up on your posts since the beginning of time. I got to around January 2012, and now the earliest I see is Sept 2012 :`( <— Sad Mac (Sex & the City?)
    The rest looks NEAT!

    • Kate Barnett

great catch! that should be resolved in the next day or so. thanks, amatoria!

  • Congrats..the hot just got hotter!

  • Beca Alexander

Congrats on the relaunch. Looking good.

  • Love the new design!

  • laura

love the “best of the internet” feature(?) 😀

  • Looking good! One thing I noticed is that when scrolling through Best of the Internet specifically, your fixed social media buttons overlap with the text!

    • Leandra Medine

Yes–thank you! Working on it as we speak. AS WE SPEAK!

      • You’re a magician. Also true of Minor Cogitations!

  • andrieya

my only beef is that whenever i load a page, it makes my spotify skip.

    • Kate Barnett

really??? is this the only site where that happens? for skipping/flapping in general spotify suggests edit –> preferences and disabling the hardware acceleration (caveat: i have no clue what the means or what the implications are for spotify). but def. let me know if it only happens with MR. could also be a glitch while the site’s getting fully cached.

  • Merrynell

Looks great! There’s definitely more stuff displayed at a time but I’ll get over it eventually. My three favorites:
    – calendar archive (the thumbnail images make it easily scannable!)
    – sort navigation (ya mean I don’t hafta search “video” within the site no more? hooray!)
    – 404 images (Props to Charlotte for creating these fun ‘not found’ illustrations!)

    • Kate Barnett

haven’t seen the 404 images, but if you click directly on a menu category from the main posts drop down (so click on “style”, “fashion” etc), each category got an awesome illustration care of charlotte….one of my favorite details on the site

      • Merrynell

Oh yes I love those category illustrations, too!

PS – I was referring to the “nothing here” images found on the carousel as well as the calendar.

        • Kate Barnett

ahhh yes! love that you found all of ’em!

  • Chic Trends

Love love looove the beautiful swan that Man Repeller has turned into. So much that I’m wandering aimlessly around your site just for the heck of it. Also, have to say that one of the recent videos on your Instagram with the dolls is hilarious! I may have watched it twice.

  • Claire

I’m super OCD, is there a way to view in order everything you posted in order of when it was posted? I used to go on homepage and just open in a new tab each new post then read it. How can I do that now? Thanks!

    • Kate Barnett

hey claire- absolutely, the feed below the carousel is set up that way as a default, so if you just scroll through that you get the same experience, and you click “Next Page” for older posts

      • Claire

Great! It doesn’t include best of the internet though or minor cogitations. I’ll have to look for though also to read them? Thanks so much for the response!

        • Kate Barnett

ah, good point. right, so similar to how manstagrams weren’t in the feed in the previous site iteration, best of the internet, minor cogitations and manstagrams live in there own special area.

  • ASULikeIt

This made my brain itch for a second, but I love the new layout. Cheers!

  • Anika Zebron

    Not just nifty, PRETTY nifty.

  • Eli

Looks great, BUT I what about the buttons at the bottom that allowed me to go to the next post without going back to the home screen?

    • Kate Barnett

hey eli! all pages should have “next page” and “previous page” below the post and above the comments section. they’re just built into the page now instead of nestled in the bar that used to pop up. if you didn’t see them today, they’ll definitely be there by tomorrow. thanks!

    • Kate Barnett

so…you’re totally right. it’s much easier to navigate with those buttons, so we’re bringing them back; should be up in the next couple days. thanks so much for the feedback!

  • WOW! You’re blog flows like a magazine now! How fun!

  • Greer Clarke

I really like simplicity so as long as it don’t get more nifty than this, this is gr8

  • I really love the new design!!!!

  • Tatiana Popovitchenko

  • Jess

The site looks amazing, setting some serious trends in not only fashion but web design!

P.S. The ads aren’t showing for me, they are just grey boxes x

    • Kate Barnett

      thanks jess!

  • daftasanything

  • sha

good design and good content, as per usual, but there’s too much going on. feel a bit a ‘repelled’ by abundance of posts.

    • Leandra Medine

double the pleasure double the fun! if the interface continues to bother you even after allowing yourself to get acquainted, let us know!

  • Isabelle

    I really like the “drop-down-fly-out
“! It´s very practical because you can navigate better in “Main Posts”
