If You Were a Cartoon Character, What Would You Wear?

The most underrated thing about the show Hey Arnold was not that Arnold’s head-shape should have loaned itself to severe brain complications, nor that is that Helga G. Pataki is Cara Delevingne.

The most underrated thing about Hey Arnold is the fashion. In fact, I would go so far as to say it’s one of the most stylish cartoons of our generation. The show’s eponymous character lives in a uniform of a crewneck knit worn over a plaid oversized button down shirt that gives him the illusion of either wearing a kilt (very Marc Jacobs) or a shirt tied around his waist (’90s redux). His best friend Gerald spends his time in a long sleeved jersey (Alexander Wang) while Sid wears a collarless leather jacket over a mock turtleneck which to me, looks very Céline.

I could go on all day comparing their wears to that which lines the racks at Barneys, but tempt me with a good time and I’ll bust out the tequila. (Aka, don’t tempt me.) The very reason I starting thinking about this in the first place, however, is because a commenter recently asked: If you were a cartoon character, what would you wear?

It’s a scary question basically asking me to commit to a lifelong wardrobe comprised of the same two to five elements (two because some cartoons wear nothing but a t-shirt and diaper, five if we’re taking more advanced stylings — like the cast of Recess – into consideration) but to answer the query my dear Miranda, I suppose I’d go with Hey Arnold’s Eugene Horowitz.

He is as unassumingly preppy as the show is stylish in his classic white polo and navy shorts. I would probably sling them low on my hips as I’m recently wan to do, or wear them high with a big thick brown belt and look very Chloé. I’d swap his white sock/flip flop combo for those white Birkenstocks I won’t shut up about (and to Eugene’s credit, they’re equally dad-on-a-vacation-esque), throw on a utility jacket should it get chilly, and then spend the rest of my life hanging out on my cartoon stoop, looking awesome, and changing only underwear.

And so now, the real question: what about you?

oooh I love this. I secretly wish I could actually have an uniform like this..
my real-world uniform would be a gray t shirt, pale blue cotton scarf, classic black leather jacket, some kind of weird midi skirt and low cut black sneakers.
Cartoon version would be a straight simple ’60 dress in white, blue hat and jacket, gray sneakers, with pink socks peeking out. What. I’m a cartoon stop judging me.

I’d love to be one of Griffin’s family. I would avoid any bandana, but I’d put on skinny jeans with some stretches!

    LOL ;-))

    Love, Gap.

I’d just learn how to draw and make myself new stuff EVERY DAY

  • Molly

I’m torn between perfect Parisian-chic Madeleine (I’d swap the flat Mary Janes for a chunky, heeled version – but TOTALLY keep the white socks) and Carmen San Diego, who has something wonderfully mid-2000′s Gucci about her. Apparently, I have a thing for good coats and hats.

      amazing calls

    • Charlotte Fassler

I was Madeleine twice for Halloween so I guess I love her style as well

I’m basing my character on accessories. I would be Linus from Charlie Brown because I carry my blanket everywhere. To fulfill your Birkenstock needs, try going with Peppermint Patty! For overall outfit, I’d have to go with Arthur and his jeans/sweater/sneaker/glasses combo.

I think I should clarify that “everywhere” means weekend overnights and such! I promise I don’t bring my blankie to work.

Hmmm ….? No? :-) (no scarves? huge cardigans? and such?)

Me too: blanket’s all I need & all I ever want :-) (as an identifying moment)

SPINELLI. Leather jacket, beanie, boots. done.

    • Kelly’s Gross-o

ABSOLUTELY. You beat me to it. In an attempt to redeem myself for my (un-redeemable) unoriginality, let me share this fun fact:

“spinello” means “joint” (as in puff, puff, pass) in Italian. Spinelli is the plural.

      MIND . BLOWN

Can I opt out of having to pick an outfit and instead just be Quinn Morgendorffer? I love myself a good midriff smiley face tee.

Macie Lightfoot from As told by Ginger. I love her purple rimmed glasses and the way she mixes prints and colors and textures.

  • Deborah

I’d wear what Velma wore on Scooby-Doo.

  • Amélia

I think my choice would have to be the minion with the bugle.

I hereby justify my statement ladies and gentleman:

    1) We all know denim will never go out of style and it’s the textile I would wear if the world was to end tomorrow and I had one last day on Earth !

    2) Dungarees can be worn in so many different and creative ways. Fun, Fun!

    3) Could pair them with a different t-shirt/(crop) top everyday.

    4) Would be prepared to party at all times (or stop listenning to some nonsense, who knows?), once I had the coolest acessory ever: a very loud bugle!

    5) And I love the gloves, sue me! ahah

Hugs *** (PS: I always love your articles Amelia!!).

I would wear my old flannel nightgown. Every cartoon character has to have its own defining outfit and that would be mine.

well i’d never have to worry about buying new outfits…

The Wild Thornberry’s… I’d even be okay with their pet monkey’s closet.

Winnie the Pooh because… no pants, no problems.

  • Rosa Pel

    I will be Jane!

  • Lua Jane

Modernised, little less gothy version of morticia addams maybe. Knee length lbd and louboutin or casadei pumps. Can that even be drawn to look good? Maybe another laid back version with black cashmere cardigan and skiny baxter jeans.

I’d dress like Sailor Moon / the Sailor Scouts. I love the “cortes” (it’s a Spanish word, it translates literally to “cuts” but IDK if that’s the correct word for it in English).
Super short skirts <3. Personalized hair style, too.
