Miami Closets: Art Basel Artist Tony Gum Dresses Like a Painting

  • Day 1: It's been a blissful yet windy weekend. This time, my brother and I have come prepared for the gale-force winds, five-minute drizzles and scorching hot rays. I'm wearing my "comfort-with-style" SELFI jumpsuit paired with the ever-so-convenient (and relevant) "Make Art Not War" cardigan by Chulaap, all topped off by a beautiful Persian goddess-inspired neck piece. Finally, I slipped into my go-to Stans.
  • Day 2: The eclectic streets and walls of Miami are quite influential. Today, I wore my favorite printed shirt (a gift from Sandy Tabatznik - Lalela Org), paired with a super-fun pompom baseball jacket and a gorgeous emerald green skirt from Norman Normal by Philippa Crooks. To add to the Miami-inspired look, I popped on heels and a pair of shades.
  • Philippa Crooks jacket and skirt -- similar here, Marni shirt, Bronx heels -- another option here
  • Day 3: If it's not a red lip, then it shall definitely be a red suit (or perhaps both!). It's safe to say that my favorite color is red. This timeless suit is from my generous mother, Mothiba Gum. Since the suit does enough of the talking, I decided to go for a tomboy-esque look by pairing it with a skateboard tee by Young and Lazy and of course, the go-to Stans.
  • Daniel Hector suit jacket and trousers -- other jacket and trouser options, Young and Lazy -shirt, Adidas sneakers
  • Day 4: One simply cannot ignore the diversity that hibernates in this beautiful city. From the food to the people to the language, you name it, the culture is rich. To warm things up, I decided to wear an incredible printed apron dress by Rich Mnisi paired with vintage slides from Pigments by Siki Msuseni. Simple yet chic. To sum up the look, I grabbed a small bag.

  • Day 5: Today is the final day and I figured it would be fitting to end things off on a high (and proud) note: identity complimented by heritage. In preparation for Pulse Miami, I donned a timeless Xhosa-inspired golf tee tucked into punchy pencil skirt by Laduma Ngxokolo, wrapped the mane with a Masai cloth-inspired print by Bertino and completed it with a leather tote bag by Tiisetso Molobi.

Tony Gum gets dressed like she lives inside of a painting. The colors, the shapes, the materials, the backdrop — everything fits together just so. A silky cream jumpsuit against a caramel wall. A pink bomber covered in rainbow pompoms over a deep emerald silk skirt. Red suit, white shirt, red lips.

Tony is an artist and film student at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where she “is producing a new prism through which to view African contemporary art, fashion and culture.” She’s also the co-founder of The Local Collective and happens to be “the coolest girl in Cape Town” according to Vogue

She’s currently in Miami for Art Basel, where she’ll be presenting her narrative self portraits focusing on emergent South African-African-Global identity formation at PULSE Miami Beach on behalf of Christopher Moller Gallery. We asked her to document a week of her looks while she’s down there. The result is akin to a cheerful and beautiful museum stroll in slideshow form. See for yourself.

So glad I read this, I’m going to PULSE this weekend..hopefully I will have the opportunity meet her!! I love that everything she wears has a purpose and I narrative behind it — especially when those very things are inspired by where I live ;))

One of the best closet posts. Love the shapes, cuts and combos combined with red lip.
