Taylor Swift Song, or Emo Lyric? Lines from “1989” For Your AIM Profile

Taylor Swift’s album title says it all — 1989. Anyone born in or near that year will recall the heyday of AIM, a time when social life and young romance revolved almost exclusively around the family computer.

She’s referenced AIM before. “Our song is the sound of screen doors” did not mean some quaint country back porch door but rather, the computerized ch-chk of signing off and on until your crush finally realized you were online.

She’s also a total emo kid. She may look like the all-American girl with a tribute to her BFFs via their initials and some inside joke in her profile (*~Love My Girls: AB, SS, KM, LE~* Milk Money LOL!) but if you comb through Tay’s not-so-far-away past she’s been pretty clear that she wasn’t the high school cheerleader.

1989 is a testament to that. It sounds like a pop album but reads like Saves The Day lyrics typed out in an AIM away message, except that in 2014 social media bios have replaced AIM profiles. Since the good emo bands died out with the last Brand New album, the following are the best lyrics from Taylor Swift’s 1989 to serve as the obvious-yet-cryptic quotes for our emotional billboards.

If you liked Motion City Soundtrack lyrics, try…

“Welcome to New York

– Everybody here wanted something more / Searching for a sound we hadn’t heard before

– Like any true love / It drives you crazy

– And you can want who you want / Boys and boys and girls and girls

– The lights are so bright/ But they never blind me.

If you liked Panic! At the Disco lyrics, try…

“Blank Space”

– I could make the bad guys good for a weekend

– Cause you know I love the players, and you love the game

– Cause darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream

If you liked The Postal Service lyrics, try…

“Style”

You got that James Dean day dream look in your eye…and when we go crashing down, we come back in every time.

“Stay”

– Could’ve been easy, all you had to do was stay

If you liked Brand New lyrics try…

“Out of the Woods”

– The rest of the world was black and white / but we were in screaming color

– I walked out, I said “I’m setting you free” / But the monsters turned out to be just trees

If you liked Jimmy Eat World lyrics, try…

“Shake It Off”

– It’s like I got this music / In my mind, saying it’s gonna be alright

If you liked Death Cab for Cutie lyrics, try…

“Bad Blood”

You live like that, you live with ghosts / If you love like that bad blood runs

“How You Get the Girl”

– …And you were too afraid to tell her what you want

If you liked Taking Back Sunday lyrics, try…

“This Love”

– This love is a life back from the dead / These hands had to let them go free / And this love came back to me

“Wildest Dreams”

– Say you’ll see me again even if it’s just in your wildest dreams

If you liked Fall Out Boy Lyrics, you’ll like…

“I Know Places”

– They are the hunters, we are the foxes and we run

– Lose lips, ships sink, all the damn time, not this time

– And you’re dead at night, your eyes so green

If you liked Coheed and Cambria lyrics, you’ll like…

“Clean”

– The draught was the very worst when the flowers that we’d grown together died of thirst

– And that morning, gone was any trace of you, I think I am finally clean

If you liked Something Corporate Lyrics, you’ll like…

“Wonderland”

– Didn’t you call my fears with the cheshire cat’s smile

“New Romantics”

– Cause baby I could built a castle / out of all the bricks they threw at me

If You Liked Dashboard Confessional Lyrics, You’ll Like…

“I Wish You Would”

– We’re a crooked love in a straight line down / If you wanna run and hide, then it makes you turn right back around

“You Are In Love”

– You understand now why they lost their minds and fought the wars…you’re in love.

  • Gotta check it out and thanks for reminding me of those old AIM sounds. I had forgotten, but now I feel a wave of nostalgia.

  • This is genius. So many good throwbacks. I definitely thought I was SO cool for listening to some of those bands in high school. Also, this reminded me of the song “the future freaks me out” by Motion City Soundtrack and I’m definitely going to be listening to that at work today. Cheers!
    P.S. Why isn’t 1989 on Spotify yet?

  • Kayla Tanenbaum

Did I like Death Cab or did I think they were the only people that understood me???? The latter.

    • Leandra Medine

I lost my virginity to possess your heart

    • Charlotte Fassler

My diary from 8th grade has Death Cab lyrics written all over it….

    • Tara Jayne

I still listen to “I will follow you into the dark” all the time. That shit is timeless.

  • Caroline D. Gomez Lassalle

I would make out with my high school boyfriend to Brand New’s Sic Transit Gloria like crazy when I was 16.

  • T Swifty definitely has that crazy girlfriend act down unfortunately….

    • Amelia Diamond

      she just loves love

      • I guess she is just addicted to love, like florence

  • YES YES YES YES YES. You literally read my mind. On the way to work today, I was listening to Out of the Woods, and pictured that line with the color to have all my font in black italicized then have the word “color” in a rainbow, probably cosmic sans subscript. that would have taken up so much room, though, to have each letter a different color.

    • as a side note: i remember i had the dashboard lyric “and you cant fake it hard enough to please everyone, or anyone at all… or anyone at all” and people were really worried about me.

  • parkzark

Dashboard knew the inner depths of my 9th grade soul so well. Listening to Hands Down nearly makes me cry tears of nostalgia every time I hear it.

Also I first got in trouble for smoking weed, because I left up an AIM conversation on the family computer while I went to the bathroom, and my mom saw it and printed it out. So hardxcore.

    • Amelia Diamond

      oo you weren’t xXstraight_edgeXx ?!

      • parkzark

thought I was a total cool hippy kid in my Lucky brand cargo pants

  • Esther Levy

I knew every word to Brand New’s Seventy Times 7 and would yell it AT my parents

    • Amelia Diamond

Brand New was such solid teenage angst music. Anddd I still listen to them

      • me too. they are on my “high skool” spotify playlist.

  • Kelsey

    her album cover is virtually an “a / s / l ?” answer: “1989 / f / nyc”

  • Autumn

What’s all this”if you liked…”, past-tense? I still love some of the bands. And there is not a band today, not ever T-Swift, who will be as good at cry-scream-singing as Dashboard Confessional. xoxo

    • Amelia Diamond

hahah you are so right. IF YOU LIKED Taking Back Sunday then you probably still love them now.

    • Yep! Death Cab and Postal Service forever 🙂

    • Case in point: “This Bitter Pill,” that song is outta control with the cry-scream-singing. Chris Carrabba understood me.

  • Aubrey Green

I like Taylor Swift, but I don’t like the fact that she seems to think/believe that being single is such a bad thing and that somehow she’s always the victim – How do you think she’s come up with all of these catchy songs…;).

  • Tara Jayne

While I was reading I was like ‘oh man I hope she references Dashboard Confessional’ and then YOU DID. When I listened to that shit the world was ending and I was in love for sure.

    • Amelia Diamond

“When I listened to that shit the world was ending and I was in love for sure.” SAME

  • Until now, I wasn’t a Taylor Swift fan. Country just isn’t my thing – but poppy pop pop that makes feel in an immediate upbeat and cheery mood? Love! I love that this is a throwback album too. It’s genius really, to be so identifiable – and who CAN’T identify with relationships built over AIM. Go Taylor!

I so need to start listening to this album! Why isn’t it on youtube yet??? I’m excited to hear what blank space sounds like!!

But is it really 80’s music? Only heard two songs and those sounded just pop, not really 80’s..

  • Sydney

still love dashboard confessional and something corporate. no shame.

  • Absolutely brilliant. Tay is my life, she is our life, she is life itself. Bless that queen Swift.

  • Alejandra

I got a twenty dollar bill that says no one’s ever complimented Taylor Swift the way you have with this post… Wheres Good Charlotte though?

  • Bethanny

I can’t stop laughing. You screwed up so many lines. Haha!!

  • DarthVadersCats

WHAT THE WHAAAT. My brain processed this and loves it but it’s not sure why but maybe that’s cause it exploded o.o (why am I talking like my 14 year old self WHAT HATH YE DONE MR)

  • Kelly’s Gross-o

I know I’m coming at this two years late so I’m basically floating this into the internetZ void but:

I met one of my best friends on the first day of freshman PE because I saw that she had “The truth is you could slit my throat” written in Sharpie on the side of her converse (pshh..who didn’t right?), and I spun her around and sang: And with my one last gasping breath I’d apologize for bleeding on your shirt!!!!!

Though I don’t shave the sides of her mohawk anymore and have abandoned the goal of marrying Bert McCracken or Adam Lazzara, we are still friends after all these years. So thanks for sharing.
