Garance imparts an effusive yes and it seems fairly obvious why. Teaming black jeans and a black t-shirt with a trench coat so lightweight, it’s essentially just a very long shirt, might be the surest, fastest and hippest way to GET FRENCH NOW!

But where do you stand in relation to Céline’s most recent addition to the family of ugly-shoes-as-fashion-cool? I’ve got to hand it to Philo for stepping away from the de facto Birkenstocks as luxury footwear to delve even deeper into thick of unsexy shoes but where does label blindness end and sartorial liberation begin?

Discuss.

I appreciate the return of the comfy flat for giving ladies a foot-friendly yet fashion-forward option. But I can’t get behind these sandals. Ugly shoes are ugly shoes, period. I don’t care if they’re Celine (or worse, the Prada Sport Sandal, gag)! I refused to wear Tevas as a kid and I refuse to wear these now. But hey, if you like ‘em, rock ‘em girl!

  • Rosebud

Absolutely not, I don’t care who makes them, ugly is ugly.

  • pauliina

yey! but this kind of shoe requires a certain kind of body type… or legs at least.

  • Débora

There´s no definition for ugliness!! Those sandals are awesome cool piece of art ;)

fashion has become so ironic that we can no longer decipher if we actually like something or hate/like something

Céline’s flandals are really like a creeper x birkenstock x alaia lace-up sandal. And they’re black. They are a fucking awesome evolution of the fundamental ‘utilitarian’ shoe trend that is and has been relevant for years (e.g. combat boots, doc martens). Factor in the festival culture that has re-emerged and is thriving amongst the generation of utilitarian shoe-wearers, and it’s not bewildering that you have a sandal like this from a house like Céline. I think they’re magical, and that Garance’s “Yes!” celebrates a designer’s – in this case Philo’s – ability to frankly observe the cultural circumstances as inspiration to create a compelling shoe. The notion of “ugly-pretty” definitely came from the French, and I’m seeing a lot of France (Alaia) in these here flandals.

Love IT! Ugly shoes should be paired with TAILORED and CUTE options. Rather than go all the way ugly: ugly shoes, ugly pants, ugly top…. That is not cool.

All I can see when I see shoes like these are old lady othropedic shoes. I took my MIL shopping last week to a store that was full of these types of shoes, for real. She’s in her 80s, people, and needs comfy shoes so she can get around. There are much cuter options that have a dash of ugly, not all the way ugly.

I include these in the ever-growing list of trends that I’m not cool enough to pull off. And I’m ok with that! I’m hard-pressed to argue with Garance’s opinion on cool because she’s got the French chic down in spades. However, I’ve learned to stick with what works for me.

No way. I think Birkenstocks are much better looking and with an infinitely more appealing price tag.
