Once upon a time, fashion editorials were confined to the shiny bound pages of magazines. These days, the web has proved equally capable of presenting striking, high-concept, and quite frankly, glossy content.
Take, for instance, The Cut’s ‘Out of the Box‘ project. In the series, NY Mag’s blog sends a trunk full of clothes to a renowned photographer, handing over all creative rights for the photog to run wild with artistic abandon. In most recent ’Out of the Box’ installment, photographer Erik Madigan enlisted a full editorial team for the shoot — stylist, makeup artist, hair stylist — and the final product was absolutely stunning.
Runway items from designers’ Fall 2013 collections (think Lanvin, Oscar, Valentino and Balenciaga) were shot from a new angle: the back. In doing so, Madigan shifts the viewers focus intently towards clothes alone. It’s a particularly interesting take when you consider that these days, fashion magazine sales are all about the “who” on the cover, and not necessarily the “what” inside.
