The Internet is great in that on any number of occasions I could find myself thinking, “Why didn’t I think of that!” and furthermore that I could have done it better, thus inferring that not only would I have thought of it but that I would have, you know, done it better.
By the power vested in the transitive property of geometry, this typically renders me much smarter than I actually am.
Today this happens in the wake of a relatively new Tumblr brought to our attention by a reader called Emma. It is a collection of photographs set on stark primary colors that, as the title of the Tumblr would suggest, depicts emojis IRL (In Real Life), LOL. And really, what is more meta than the personification of a digital icon mimicking human emotion and the subsequent use of actual humans to mimic that?
There are praying hands, there’s an eggplant (raise your hand if you’d have preferred to see a purple spray-painted penis?), there is Rosie the Riveter’s-but-not-really tainted arm, a mustache man, a hand pound and tongue. Everything, basically, that you might expect from your emojis. Where I am disappointed is in the lack of diversity. Where, after all, be the Koala bears and weird plants? And why is the red tango lady not dancing with the gumption and conviction evident in her icon?
I propose that we make some of our own. Who’s in? Who’s with me?
