“Give a woman the right makeup and she can conquer the world.”
Charlotte Tilbury says this in Man Repeller’s latest Chatroom episode with such impassioned conviction that you can’t not believe her. Don’t be surprised if the interview prompts you to order a new blush or search for cat eye tutorials on YouTube (CT, by the way, has a great how-to), even if you tend to be makeup-free.
The next step is mastering your application technique. Charlotte Tilbury shared her tried-and-true (and, even better, easy) method with Leandra, along with a few other insider beauty secrets she’s learned on the job.
Here, five tips to know:
How to achieve the perfect bold lip.
“I always trace the mouth with a matching lip liner first,” says Charlotte. “It’s an easy way to define where the lipstick should end and start, so you’ll get a more perfected lip.”
When it comes to your eyes, however, the product should be in a contrasting shade.
“What people don’t realize is they have ‘eye sparkles.’ For example, mine are gray, green and blue — but I want to bring out the green. By using the right contrasting color, people are like, ‘Wow, I never knew you had green eyes!’ It’s artist’s trick.”
Don’t worry if this one sounds complicated. Charlotte’s done all the hard work for you with her color-coded line of Color Chameleon pencils.
Also good for the eyes? Hemorrhoid cream!
The British beauty expert explains that back in the day she used it around the lids to “tighten everything.” She has since created a tool that does exactly the same thing — her Mini Miracle Eye Wand — but it’s way less awkward to use in public. Another surprising hack for de-puffing: “Dunking your face in ice. It constricts and tightens everything. If you are ever feeling bloated, hungover or exhausted, use it for a mini lift.”
Felt tip pens = the perfect summer popsicle lip stain.
“I used felt tip pens before they were even a real product. I will never forgot doing it on the cover of i-D magazine with Kate Moss. She was like, ‘What are you using on me?’ and I said, ‘This felt tip pen will give you a bitten, stained, like-you’ve-been-eating-berries look.'”
When in doubt, think light, light, light!
“Capturing and playing with light will enhance the best version of yourself.” That means embracing contouring —“it sculpts in the cheekbones and reflects light off the top” —and getting into strategically-placed shimmer. “I love my Beach Sticks for this. Think of all those girls like Elle Macpherson, Demi Moore and Kate. When I was on holiday with them, it’s how I gave them a natural, glowy look.”
Now go forth, wear makeup and be happy! Or go forth and don’t wear makeup, if that makes you happy. In the words of Charlotte Tulbury, the important thing is that you “enhance you life in whatever way you can — don’t limit yourself.” Hear, hear.
