Everything I Wore (And Wanted to Wear) This Fashion Week in Mirror Selfies

  • Boo! You already know everything about this outfit because you read the below copy, right?

Saks Potts coat, Creatures of Comfort pants, Céline snow boots, The Volon bag
  • Friday, February 10th; no snow, but 29 degrees Fahrenheit (feels like 10 degrees, though).

I wanted to wear a tweed vest and shirt so as to emulate Aladdin, but paired with track pants and loafers because I'm a modern woman, and modern women can be any number of things!

Chanel vest and blouse, Isabel Marant track pants, Church's loafers
  • I took off the Aladdin garb and first put on a silk blouse, then realized I have these huge earrings that have the power to transform a day of doldrums. The earrings with the top felt like too much for me, though.
  • I put on a thick sweater instead.

Alessandra Rich earrings, Garrett Leight x Clare V. sunglasses, Marine Layer sweater
  • Saturday, February 11th; overcast and 45 degrees Fahrenheit.

I wanted to wear this red silk skirt that I got in South Korea last year with a cropped, marled knit (this outfit was actually recycled from a New Year's look I never ended up wearing), embellished socks (Rachel Comey) and sandals (Gucci). But I don't roll (read: cover shows) on Shabbos, so...
  • I put on leggings and a sweater and a pair of sneakers (Golden Goose) and this awesome Sandy Liang coat and hung out with my husband.
  • It was fair game following nightfall, though. I put on a Chanel jacket that they lent me for fashion week with a black turtleneck by Splendid, raw jeans from Brock and black boots that reminded me slightly of the cowboy shoes at Calvin Klein.
  • Sunday, February 12th; 39 degrees Fahrenheit and interminable sleet.

I'd have worn a green velvet pantsuit (Frame Denim) with pink satin kitten heels (Rochas) and one of Abie's work shirts, but the forecast called for STAYETHEFUCKINBED, which I could not.
  • And thus ended up in my trusty Walk of Shame trench coat.
  • Here's what the inside of the outfit looked like. I got these boots on sale from a store in India through Farfetch. You should get a pair!

Isabel Marant boots, Saint Laurent jeans, Christopher Kane sweater
  • Monday, February 13th; 36 degrees Fahrenheit but feels like -10 due to wind chill. At least the sun is shining?

This would have been a completely apropos outfit for the day — a red sweater with a turtleneck underneath it, a green skirt (Miu Miu), tights, sensible boots and a very warm puffer coat (by Ganni). Somehow, though, it didn't feel right. Too...fussy...or something.
  • I took off the sweater and skirt and changed into a tweed zip-up dress, maintaining the turtleneck, tights and boots.
  • Here's the full lewk! The sunglasses are Karen Walker, fyi.
  • Made more interesting, obviously, thanks to my lunchbox -- aptly designed to look like a New York Taxi.
  • Monday night, still 36 degrees Fahrenheit, but not as windy.

I turned the vest I never wore on Friday into a wrap top of sorts, paired it with the pants that I never wore on Thursday and another funtastic RealReal score: these Chanel sock boots.
  • Tuesday, February 14th; 45 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny.

This day rules. I'm not even going to bother with a coat, it's practically spring break in New York and there is no other outfit I would rather wear.
  • Wednesday, February 15; 41 degrees fahrenheit and sunny, sun sun.

Technically, I could have worn this Rejina Pyo dress with the Oscar Tiye boots, but I'd have had to put a jacket over it, which would have concealed the whole point of this lewk: the sleeves and boob stitching. So instead...
  • Behold: a mint-green wool suit that my mom wore 17 years ago to my brother's bar mitzvah. I shortened the skirt like five inches and added polka-dot tights with these cool cowboy boots from Sandro -- a hot tip from Charlotte Groeneveld.
  • Here's a detail. Two more fun facts about this outfit: My mom made the earring in my ear and these sunglasses are part of a collaboration between Gentle Monster and Tilda Swinton.
  • Thursday, February 16; 37 degrees Fahrenheit and sunny

I will probably have to put a coat over this, but for now I feel so great in this Dries van Noten jacket I bought from Amuze like two years ago for $300 plus a grey turtleneck sweater, Krewe sunglasses and jeanszszszszs.

This really cool thing happens every winter in New York wherein we think this might actually be the season that we get away with a definitively mild stretch of weather until boom!

Last year, that boom was a 72-hour polar vortex and wind chill that debuted just in time for February fashion week. This year, the boom was a snow storm that no one saw coming immediately following a 60-degree February day. It predictably inaugurated February fashion week once again.

For what it’s worth, I appreciate historically regular weather just as much as the next environmentalist. It is February. It should not be 60 degrees, and for the most part, the weather weather doesn’t actually bother me. You put on long johns, then leggings, then jeans, then snow pants and it’s sure as hell not comfortable, but you power through it in warmth.

But there’s an added layer of complexity and frustration when it’s fashion week because you’re not just dressing for survival anymore, you’re dressing for your peers and your legacy; those street-style photos may very well be the only thing to outlive you. So this season, instead of relying on picture-accrual from the venerated photographers/heroes who sacrifice feeling in their limbs on the front lines this time of year, I took mirror selfies to depict the outfits that I wore and the ones I wanted to wear — a fine but crucial difference. Here’s an example:

Thursday, February 9th; 29 degrees and eight inches of snow. What I wanted to wear:

Leandra Medine Style Mirror Selfies NYFW Fashion Week Man Repeller _3745

This tropical tank top with checked wool pants I found on The RealReal for $200 and MR by Man Repeller loafers. Sure, I’d wear a coat, but whatever, these are my selfies, my rulez.

What I did wear:

  • Where are your jeans from in the photo captioned “February 14th, 45 degress…”? They look perfect!!!

    • Leandra Medine

They are Brock! The same ones I wear all the time. Very expensive, unfortunately, but for what it’s worth, they are practically the only jeans I have worn in the past 12 months! Jeans are so personal though, a different fit/cut is THE PERFECT PAIR for everyone, so I’d def try them on before buying, if you’re thinking about it. Here’s a link: http://rstyle.me/n/cfjed2brd

      • Thanks! Definitely expensive, but better to spend that on one perfect pair than $100 on 5 pairs that are never quite right!

  • definitely my favorite posts by MR, next to Office Apropos!!! also, those track pants in photo #2 are AMAZING

  • Annie

ahahhahahhah, great idea ‘my rulez’. you look lovely in all of the photos!

what are your jeans from february 16? they are perfect.

  • I AM REALLY INTO THIS!! I love your closet and I wish you wore all of the things you wanted to wear, although what you ended up wearing was great, too. I need a full length mirror. The only way I can see my full look is by way of the reflection of myself in the fridge door… not the best method.

  • ‘Sure, I’d wear a coat, but whatever, these are my selfies, my rulez.’ – I just adore everything about this post 🙂

  • M.a.s.r.

I’ve been back and forth between a firefighter and an astronaut for some time now but I have finally decided that when I grow up I’m going to be Aladdin with full credit going to your slide 2 ensemble.

Hi Victoria!!!! The jacket is by a Scandinavian brand called Ganni – can find through their own site, Shopbop, etc. the zip up dress is a Chanel sample that I borrowed

  • The red boots are making me emotional. Suddenly I desperately need some eighties-looking cone heels in my life

This post is hilarious. I love seeing the rollercoaster of emotion of deciding what to wear. And in this article especially since the circumstances put one under a lot of pressure – fashion week AND a polar vortex!

I love the ‘what I wanted to wear’ aspect of this post! So good to see the process you go through in choosing your outfits and how you tweak things etc.! I so often finding myself reverting to the same outfits when ‘what I wanted to wear’ isn’t going to work for whatever reason, so it is so interesting to see how creatively you work with it!

  • ASWK
