Hey, It’s Leandra: What I Wore Every Day of NYFW

Leandra Medine | September 19, 2016

I had a lot of fun getting dressed this summer, particularly because every outfit that I wore had a purpose and that purpose was singular: not being pregnant when you want to be pregnant sucks, but at least my clothes still fit me. So I really milked the shit out of that cow and wore unique enough things every day that by the time Fashion Week came around, I was knighted as a member of Buzzfeed’s “Week’s Most Drab” list not once, but twice.

I care enough to share that with you, but not enough to rescind how I feel, which is like I haven’t had this much fun getting dressed since I saved up birthday money and got my first pair of high heels when I was like, 15. And when the going gets fun? The fun gets going. Every day in New York was a cool case study in how much further I could push the no-pants envelope, doing that while I tried to reconcile looking like a Martian vacationing in the Far East.

But even more important than that (I know! What’s more important than Martians in Bali?) is how obvious it seems that getting dressed is a unilateral experience but how infrequently it actually is. In previous seasons, I know I have asked myself: will the old guard roll their eyes at me? Have I worn this too many times? Where I usually “road map” outfits in advance (one less decision to make in the earlier hours of one’s morning), I didn’t do anything of the nature this season. I didn’t feel pressure to get dressed, or think too much about how the clothes would be perceived. I kind of just put stuff on. And for the most part it felt great (although I did wear an interesting pair of sunglasses on Wednesday that might make you wonder about my relation to Seth Green). Maybe I looked like a clown (I can’t be the judge of that), but this clown, at least, was really me.

The question I’m still asking, really, is whether I felt more comfortable — like I was getting dressed for a regular day — because fashion week is starting to feel more like a collection of regular days (I would assume this is how it was before the photographers and dramatic spectacles), or if this, like everything else, is just a trend pattern. Are the dressing cues of street style changing? Has the trade evolved? Is it becoming itself again and demanding only honest outfits?

I don’t have an answer but I do have a slideshow of looks and explanations, so enjoy that at your leisure and meet me down south of “You May Also Like” to talk about life, basketball and if you want, Seth Green.

  • Max

Not sure where to drop this q for MR so will leave here:

Next year, can you do a street style feature on NYABF? Bc it is always aAaAaAaAamazing and inspiring and just oh so good

    • Leandra Medine

      YES! WHAT A GOOD PITCH

      • Max

I WISH I HAD THOUGHT OF IT SOONER

  • Mallory Harmon

That Stella Jean skirt and #11 are so good!!!!

  • =^..^=

I have a dreaded dentist appointment in an hour, so these utterly fab looks (slides #4,5,9 &11) calmed me down & lifted me up (if you know what I mean).

    Thanks, sis !

  • Holly Laine Mascaro

Slides 3 & 4 are where it’s at !!! Need flowy pants like that. I feel MYself even looking at you in 4. Maybe that’s the universal outfit of self.

  • I love these outfits. You look so comfortable and true to yourself. I would definitely say that honesty is back in style for street style but there will always be certain ways of dress that seem prescribed and impersonal.

Aside from all that, it seems like you’re getting a lot out of the Celine top, right? ooo I would be so excited to layer it over turtlenecks if I were youuu.

    • that turtleneck x celine collab weather is a-comin’ soon, isn’t it?

      • Max

Today I got an email from Everlane w/ the subject line “It’s Going To Get Colder”, so yes, it’s a-comin’

      • soooo soooooon. I am super excited for it but more than happy that it’s taking it’s time. Really digging September weather right now.

  • Jessicaaaa

    F A B U L O U S

  • Leandra, you look great and you look like you. By now you’re an old pro at fashion week and the lineup is as much yours as it is anyone else’s. And, thus, honest and good style. I really, really like what you wore to the Rachel Comey show — those shorts and black top. Such subtle but lovely proportions!

  • EmilyWilson

Best line: “belt from a floral arrangement.” (Monday night)

  • Googled buzzfeed’s ‘weeks most drab’ list and I don’t quite understand if it’s meant to be ironic? Everyone on the drab list looks so much cooler than anyone on the fab list… I also don’t understand why anyone would ‘write’ the list/who would ‘read’ it? ANYWAY you rock, all the outfits rock and I love love love the pale pink silk shirt from slide 4. Now I’m regretting wishing the summer away because I want to bring my cutoffs back out.

    • I just did the same thing! The idea made me a little angry but mostly just confused cause they all looked so good…

  • annie_on_the_trail

Love the Celine tank/slip dress look – amazing! (P.S. you might want to hem those yellow pants before they shred. )

  • Heather Davis Wyancko

Your legs are crazy!!!! Models would kill to have your gams. Love your looks. You’re my favorite power clasher!

  • JB

How do we get those gams Medine? Spill your secrets!

  • Greer Clarke

Whoaaaa I just fell into a trance on the Rejina Pyo Moda Operandi page

  • Vana

I agree with dressing like its a regular day or most importantly yourself for Fashion week. Yes there are photographers there and we should be mindful of that but it would suck to dress for others and not get the response you wanted. This is why I love seeing you at Fashion week cause you stay true. *damn that was long*

  • Just went back to the “trying” post and I was there once too. So I’m thinking of you Leandra and sending pregnancy prayers your way ’cause I know the going can get frustrating. Also I come here for style and you always deliver : )

  • Julia Park

    Dear Everyone,
How, oh how, do you find interesting and beautiful clothes/shoes/bags that don’t cost you your entire life savings on The Real Real?! Some advice is greatly needed over here!

    • Leandra Medine

      MANIC CHECKING
But also, knowing exactly what you’re looking for/which brands are best for you

      • Julia Park

Let the manic checking begin!! (I just found some heels that look like picnic baskets – amazing!)

  • Lakirk

I looked at tagged pics of you wondering ¿what would leandra wear? And I definitely got that air of authenticity. It felt like yourself on a regular day, wearing stuff you have even worn before, not thinking too much. It felt fresh. No statement pieces like that over the shoulder Rosie top you wore a few years ago (and that made me ask myself, who is this girl?!?!) but I think that’s why your choices were successful. I got the hint that you were not asking the question ¿what would x or y wear? Or ¿what would x or y think about this? No. Leandra did Leandra ??

  • Pandora Sykes

    No.5 is my favourite, interestingly

  • chris

    Simply gorgeous. Every single day.

  • Lacey Bergevin

I love the Sunday outfit! Plus….those legs <3

  • Jolie

Is it weird to say you look radiant in all these outfits? Most importantly, it’s obvious that these outfit choices are YOU and that you like wearing them — this may be my favorite NYFW lookbook from you ever! I feel like, as you guys mentioned in your post about street style being authentic again, people are very much embracing themselves and their true personal style rather than outlandish looks with no underlying personality this year. Also loving your hairstyles!

  • camila

    nice, i lovvvve it

  • Ai-Ch’ng GB

    Super-relaxed looking!

Looks 11, 8, 7, 4, 1 – my absolute favourite combos on you. And of course, all those sunnies.

  • jess

Fourth look is DIVINE. I need that Peggy blouse asap

  • The weather seems amazing! Every outfit is better and fresher, but I had my summit with the fringed skirt! You are always and inspiration 🙂

Check out my latest post with wood watches and a comfy afterwork outfit.

    Bests!!

  • Rena Fedorova

I looked up Buzzfeed’s list and realized everyone on the “drab” list was dressed with character and bright personality and everyone on the “fab” list was just very put together, which like you mentioned, isn’t who you are. Every time I see pictures of you in your outfits I almost feel like yelling “Yassss! That’s my friend! Go girl!” even though we don’t know each other.

  • Ashley

Jesus Leandra those legs! You’re like a shiny giraffe! Also you slightly resemble the ghost of Amy Winehouse, god bless both of your souls. V proud of your effortlessly (accidentally?) inspirational fashion week dressing.
