ICYMI: Here’s part 1 of our ice cream guide. But if you’re Team Savory, check out our guides to tacos or pizza. And try not to start salivating.

Imagine your perfect summer day. Swimsuit on body, sunglasses on head… And what’s that dripping down your hand? Ice cream, duh.

New York City is the queen of options, which means that your summer ice cream adventures are limitless. But if you don’t know where to start, allow us to help.

Set your out of office message to ‘going on a snack break,’ and head out into the world of dairy deliciousness. Bonus points if you can hit them all in one day. Extra bonus if you can fit last summer’s guide in there too.

If the West Village floats your boat:

Big Gay Ice Cream

What to order: Bea Arthur, with American Globs coming in at a close second

What else to know: Lily is mesmerized by the life-size unicorn mural on the wall, which is bedazzled with over 6000 Swarovski crystals.

Cones

Man-Repeller-Ice-Cream-Cones

What to order: One scoop of Peanut Butter with one scoop of Dulce de Leche

What else to know: Harling is still mustering up the courage to try some of the more niche flavors like Sweet Potato Brie and Corn, which are having a real moment on Instagram.

If the East Village is where you hang:

Fresco Gelateria

What to order: The Pistachio and Salted Caramel

What else to know: Elizabeth wants you to keep an eye out for their espresso and small bites, and also admits that because of the close proximity to a lingerie shop called Azaleas, she has indeed gone lingerie shopping after eating ice cream.

138 2nd Ave, New York, NY 10003

If Chinatown is more your speed:

Chinatown Ice Cream Factory

What to order: Almond Cake

What else to know: Jasmin says that if you’re feeling lucky, you may just get a Pocky stick with your ice cream.

What to order: Peanut Butter and Chocolate swirl with rainbow sprinkles

What else to know: Leandra hauls it all the way uptown instead of going to the Bloomingdales in Soho, because uptown they have more flavors and, “A topping bar as vast as the ocean.”

  • All of these sound great but I have to add a personal rec for van leeuwen: the earl grey. It’s amazing and delicious and tastes like fruit loops somehow.

  • Pia Hocevar Mucic

What! No 10below? That ice cream is in my thoughts daily.

OMG I forgot about this place. I went once and my mind was blown and IDK why I’ve never been back.

  • So happy that you featured Cones – they’ve been around before artisanal ice cream became so trendy in NYC.

I think I owe it to everyone to do a PSA here that the banana gelato at Cones is hands down the best flavor. I would never normally pick banana because fake banana flavor is the worst, but my friend made me try this in approx 2008 and I have never looked back. It’s just bananas, sugar, and cream blended together. I also feel the need to ask why Amelia gets the vegan ice cream flavors… Is Amelia a stealth secret vegan?

  • blanca indig

Tell me one of these joints are kosher!

  • Alyssa G

Ahhhhh I wanna try these all so badly. This makes me that much more excited to move to NYC at the end of August!!!
