MR’s Guide to the Best Iced Coffee and Cold Brew in NYC

Because sometimes it’s hot and an extra pep in your step doesn’t come about organically.

06.06.16

Sometimes you have several deadlines and one-to-two dragging feet and you’d consider committing a misdemeanor — you know, one of those harmless crimes that’s pretty whatever but definitely still illegal — for a cup or maybe a vat of coffee but also it’s 90 degrees outside and your shorts are doing that horrible thing and the thought of a hot beverage alone could drive you to a felony or so much worse.

This is where your therapist comes in.

Just kidding, this is obviously where iced coffee comes in. And if you happen to live in New York, this is also where the MR Guide of the very same enters your hot, sweaty and gorgeous life.

We’ve rounded up our favorite iced coffees and cold brews from around town — particularly around our office and apartments because apparently we’re lazy — for every hot occasion and crisis you encounter this summer. Click through above and then tell us yours — especially if they’re in other corners of the city!

  • Drinking hot coffee at the moment, because my office is Siberia (but not really). Outside, I probably wouldn’t dare!

    • Harling Ross

I am also drinking hot coffee and sweating like a pro athlete

      • Haha not sweating like a pro athlete (yet)! What is it about cold offices that make you sweat more? Or is that just me??

  • Highly recommend cold brew from Blue Bottle. And the buckle! (muffin-like treat)

  • What’s cold brew? Like cold tea? (excuse me, I’m British!) x

    • Yup! It’s just cold coffee, but it’s actually stronger than regular hot coffee, since it will be watered down by the ice. It’s pretty good! Especially when it’s effing hot out.

It’s just ground coffee that is just brewed with cold/room temperature water, for 12 hours or more. It can then be heated up or drunk cold with coffee ice cubes and milk etc. It tastes a lot smoother brewed cold, because when you brew with hot water, more acids and oils are drawn out. I leave a jar of it in a kitchen cupboard overnight and then it’s good to go in the morning. Mmmmmm.

This is especially relevant for me because I will be in NY in AUGUST hanging out with my cool lil sister who doesn’t like coffee but will get dragged to a million coffee shops by yours truly.

CUSP Brooklyn in Park Slope is missing from this list!

Dispatch from currently 85+ degrees Seattle: Stumptown cold brew! As well as French bakery Belle Epicurean’s freshly brewed: foamiest cup of magic, ever.

DOES ANYONE ELSE LIKE ICED COFFEE MORE THAN COLD BREW THOUGH? BECAUSE I DO AND I FEEL ALONE.

  • Any place with nitrogen iced coffee? It’s the creme de la creme of drinking cold coffee!

I’m a problematic coffee drinker because I hate the taste of actual iced coffee but I’m addicted to it when it’s full of half-and-half and like ten sugars. So please don’t feel guilty about your syrups, Leandra. Just know that somewhere in Manhattan, I’m running around with an iced coffee so sweet that the bodega man tells me on a weekly basis that I’m going to get diabetes.

La Colombe forever (and ever.) Also I’ll second Harling’s love of Joe & The Juice’s green juice.

I don’t understand the concept of drinking an iced latte with ice. Milk mixed with water is vile ? In Australia, an iced latte has no ice but a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream instead, which is a million times better! The only place that makes this in NY, is Bluestone Lane. Luckily, they are everywhere!
