Office Apropos: Winter 2015

  • It's Monday, do you know where your turtleneck is? I'm wearing a J.Crew turtleneck, Frame Denim button down, Miu Miu skirt (or as I like to call it, a high fashion answer to the necessity for adult diapers), Hue tights and Céline brogues.
  • Call it a padded suit, or don't. Miu Miu coat
  • Here's me posing like it's school picture day. Today I had an etiquette lesson for a story I am working on ($poiler!) and the dress code politely hinted that I not resemble a sea urchin in pajamas. My interpretation of the coach's request was to come dressed like a 3rd grade teacher in 1995, hence the turtleneck (Ralph Lauren)/ Pencil skirt which is half swiveled around (H&M)/boots (Mango)/ and tights combo. Sunglasses by Joan Didion. I mean Céline.
  • You can tell it's Monday because my eyes aren't really opening and I most definitely slept in that sweater outfit last night. The collar poking out belongs to a shirt culled from a school uniform store. Creepers by way of Zara; leather jacket from The Reformation.
  • Judging by my stance, this photo was taken seconds after having just swiped a billion extra utensils from Organic Avenue. This Acne Coat is one of my best purchases to date, right before this Zara scarf and Topshop booties. The jeans are Topshop as well.
  • While it's true that you can't fake cool, you can certainly attempt to, which is precisely what I've done here with a Calvin Klein collection coat, Totême v-neck sweater layered over another J.Crew turtleneck, high waist Blk Dnm jeans and a pair of Iro boots, which I essentially jacked off Esther's feet.
  • Safety pins be on my skins.
  • There was a lot of pressure getting dressed today because I was interviewing TLC in the afternoon. Not only did I want them to think I looked cool, I wanted to think I looked cool; what you wear to meet your adolescent idols stays burned into your brain forever. Here's what will now be burned into my brain forever: a jacket by Oscar de la Renta, a J.Crew cashmere sweater that is actually a v-neck I wore backwards for chokey-neck effect, a riding shirt, my favorite jeans from The Reformation and Laurence Dacade boots.
  • Getting dressed knowing you are going to meet TLC is hard. Not sure why I thought a strange woolen set was apropos but so be it. I am also trying to resurrect my over-the-knee boots but still feel somewhat conflicted about how they have eaten 3/4s of my leg. The turtleneck is Zara, the coat is once again vintage and the boots are 7 for All Mankind.
  • Here I am trying to marry two of my favorite decades: The 70s and 90s. I can't say if I've been successful but man is my middle part aggressive. The jacket was a recent score from The Outnet and is in no way built to withstand the winter chill. The choker and jeans are Asos, boots are Rachel Comey and the sweater, Brandy Melville.
  • You know what a suede skirt suit does? It says, "I am here and I am not messing around, but that doesn't mean I don't know how to relax or take it easy in my supple business-casual suit, so be kind but keep your distance if you are interested in engaging in further relations with me." You know? Title A skirt suit, Etre Cecile blouse, Valentino heels.
  • Despite whatever it is that cool face I'm making says, this is the type of outfit I am most comfortable in: a good turtleneck sweater (Club Monaco), an oxford shirt worn underneath, ankle boots (from H&M) and baggy pants from my roommate who's a guy (he got them at Urban Outfitters).
  • Here I am trying to make up for my poor workout regimen in 2015 by giving the illusion that I am, in fact, sporty. Under that old school Adidas sport jacket is an OG Los Angeles Raiders shirt coupled with Rag & Bone jeans, a flannel, Adidas Super Stars and Westward Leaning shades.
  • Here I am being the human version of a seven layer moussaka. The two Asos coats pictured are no phyllo dough, but they're warm enough. I wasn't feeling my face on this day and so I did what any Jared Leto would do and pulled my hair into a man bun. The white top and jeans are Zara, and the clogs, Madison Harding.
  • Cobblestone confession: these spectacles are so far from prescribed, when I wear them I lose $20 every minute to the douche bag jar. It is an expensive feat, yes, but one well worth it. I'm wearing a J.Crew turtleneck (again), Scanlan and Theodore white blouse, Rosie Assoulin jacket, Patrick Ervell jeans and Saint Laurent boots.
  • I'd like to apologize upfront for my weird face and pose. That out of the way, we can talk about my outfit where I am wearing a suede Ralph Lauren coat that has proved itself useful in a variety of situations (I wore a coat-coat over this while walking to work), a Tory Burch skirt that is so pretty I leave it out on my bed for decoration, and a pair of Laurence Dacade boots that I got so on sale I threw them a party.
  • Can you tell I just saw "Inherent Vice"? I've been on a groovy 1970s kick lately. Here I'm sporting Ray Bans, a formerly floor-length vintage coat which I hemmed (not with bobby pins), a Reformation ruched turtleneck, fringy skirt and loafers care of Zara. In case you notice something different about me, there are lifts hidden in those shoes.
  • Guess how many of these buttons are held on by safety pins.
  • Okay, so I have to admit to something: I'm currently wearing Band-Aids on my nipples. I'm glad that's out of the way. The low v-neck top which prompted me to go braless is Aritzia, the coat is Zara, the clogs are No. 6 and if you don't know who makes these awful pants, then I've got just one question for you: Do you even go here?
  • In theme: Thursday. Even though it's Friday. What most acutely says "Weekend, come at me!" has got to be a striped jacket that vaguely resembles a set of trendy fallopian tubes. Coupled with a t-shirt that reads "Democracy" and boasts a photo of Joan Didion and a pair of pants that connote a sense of seriousness but simultaneously a pair of sneakers to say, "Don't forget, it's Friday!," I am shimmying into the weekend like a regular Cha Cha DiGregorio. (By the way, those glasses are still non-prescription.)
  • Freaky Friday, thought I'd never see you again. I was meeting my mom after work for a THING so I'm a bit more jazzy here than I'd normally be on a Friday, but the look itself is at once that of a Milanese man and "very me." I'm wearing my new favorite blazer by Tibi, a bandana, Madewell jeans, a shirt from J.Crew, Bass loafers and my snazzy socks are Ace & Everett
  • Call my jeans Kid Cuti
  • It felt appropriate to bookend the week with sweater outfits. Here I am a walking manifestation of Esther's picks. She says, "Jump!" I ask, "How high?" She says, "Buy this!" and I try to learn what Bitcoins are. I got that freaky Penny Lane coat at a flea market in high school. The boots are Acne and the clutch is Poppy Lissiman.
  • On Fridays I like to channel my girl Aaliyah. Adidas track pants, Alexander Wang sweatshirt, 1717 Olive beanie and Dr. Martens are all yours truly; the bike, unfortunately, is not.

Four girls, five days, 20 outfits

The striped shirts and sheer cropped socks of fall have become the misleadingly 70s-representative puffer coats and double ply-soled creepers of winter. This, of course, indicates nothing more, nothing less than the introduction of a new installment of Office Apropos wherein we, the writers — Esther included! — document five days of work outfits and live to tell about it. Click through the slideshow for captions and credits then shimmy over to the comments section and answer us this: what would you do-o-o for a Klondike bar?
