Yesterday The Nowness published a fantastic short film by Lina Piloplyte and blog photographer Ari Seth Cohen named after his street style site, "Advanced Style." While yes it's true, I social media networked the shit out of this video last night via Twitter and Facebook, it is perhaps one of the more inspiring things I've seen in my seemingly short day, celebrating a different generation of fashion. One that's likely shaped the Man Repeller age The film is choc full of heart warming quotes from the unfiltered, unapologetic, colorfully chic women and as it happens on a separate note, it seems like I've Zuckerberg'd* them: These ladies have been exercising their creative license and man repelling gene for decades.
In any case, peep the wildly entertaining dialogue and erection-inducing fashions in the video below.
"You don't want to look crazy. The object is to look as chic as you can."
"Young women, you're going to be old women one day. Don't worry about it. Don't sweat it. Don't worry about getting older. Every era, it builds character."
*Zuckerberg'd: Verb. 1. To steal one's concept or idea and harvest it as your own.
...If this doesn't get you excited to hit menopause, I don't know what will.

Wow, that video is amazing. It's so encouraging and inspirational! I love those ladies. Thanks so much for sharing this :) I wanna be just like them!
ReplyDeleteCheers!

Your title is so true. One day, you'll have to accept that there will always be someone younger and hotter than you, and finally dress to express your character. Man-repelling character, that is.

Deletei will be a crazy old multi-coloured lady. they look so happy. really lovely video. well done to the people behind it.
ReplyDeleteThis really is so inspiring
ReplyDeleteI love this video! Seriously, these women are so amazing.
ReplyDeleteI wish I lived somewhere OTHER than Kansas City, where man repelling and dressing like these old ladies didn't make people look at me like i belonged in a mental facility.
That quote at the end is perfect. I adore it.
I'm not sure whether I'm terrified or captivated by that pride of cougars. Don't worry about getting older? Right.
ReplyDeletei love all the quotes!

So amazingly inspiring. I'm the odd 40 something professional who loves The Man Repeller but worried a bit about whether it would work for me. I've been trying bits and pieces down that road and getting amazingly positive responses from people (women, of course). These women inspire me to keep it up and continue to do my own thing. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGreat video! I've watched it like 3 times already)
ReplyDeleteI love what you're doing in this blog! You rule, girl!
Kisses from France
My best friend and I always joke that we're going to be overdressed eccentric old ladies one day. (Personally, I can't wait until my hair turns white so I can dye it cotton candy colors.) This video is just perfect. These broads are awesome!
ReplyDeleteSo Awesome.
ReplyDeletewww.sparkleontheside.blogspot.com
that was the perfect start to my morning. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely ... love ... this ... post! Let us look forward to growing old!
ReplyDeleteI am 49 and try to live my life like this every, single day. Often I look at my closet and think about this blog when I get dressed. Even though I am at a time in my life where I should fret about about not having a husband, I try to do something "man repellant" every single day. I love these ladies and I love your blog.
ReplyDeleteLove the video...simply great!
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing this video. it's so inspiring to see that we'll be repelling for years to come!

Hope you don't mind if I re-post! Thanks!!!
ReplyDeleteI only wish that the video was longer! The women in this movie remind me so much of my mother... who also can't get enough color in her life, dresses depending on her mood, and while it annoyed me when I was younger, she rarely "dresses down" for the day, even when she is just going to work or even walking the dog.
ReplyDeleteShe once told me that she hated it when people said "Diane, you look tired" (which I think is every woman's most despised comment), and to remedy that, she wears bright colors, "unusual" combinations and always tries to keep a smile on her face. While many of the things my mother wears may not be my style, I respect her for not caring what other people think. The majority of people comment on my mom's outfit, rather than how tired she looks if she's having a bad day, which makes her feel great.
those are some intense, intense bangles... and rings. i am being shown up.

Inspiring! Great to know that you can be a confident man-repeller as you age gracefully :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE this!!! They are so cool! :D
ReplyDeletehttp://www.closet-fashionista.com
Oh my gosh! I love these women!
ReplyDeletehow inspiring.. I can't agree more with the video and praise those ladies.
ReplyDeleteI hope one day we "manrepellers" will be just as gracious and chic
love your post
these ladies are wonderful - i hope i can continue to repel at that level at their age. AND Man Repeller is fantastic - unique & inspiring, you're helping me out of a serious fashion rut. thank you thank you thank you.
ReplyDeleteI am 48 and I love fashion and personal expression. My grandmother is my inspiration, like the wonderful women in the video she wore what she liked and made her feel great! Fashion is very creative and artistic and expressive but most of all it is FUN!
ReplyDeleteKeep up your good work because you make fashion super FUN!!! Love your blog
I love these women. They remind me of my 83 year old grandma. She loves loud colors, funky jewelry, and patterns and she doesn't give a crap what other people think. She just giggles (yes giggles) and says "People might think I'm crazy but they just need to lighten up and step out of the box." She is always pushing me to have more fun with my style and I hope if I reach my 83rd birthday I'm enjoying life and fashion just as much as she is.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful and inspiring! Makes me want to throw on every bright color in my wardrobe.
ReplyDeleteWell i think the older you get the easier becomes to be just, yourself! At list we should try to. I expect to become this kind of old fantastic lady when the time comes.
ReplyDeleteP.S. You really Zuckerberg'd them, but you didn't on pourpose...
This is an amazing video! Thanks so much for sharing it. Liked it so much I posted it on my blog too.

Long live the Grande Dame!!! While living in Sydney, at a pub (as you do) an elderly woman came in, alone, in a fur (in Sydney!!!), ordered a cocktail and sat at the bar. She was heavily bejeweled and over the top in every way possible. Even pinched a male friends bottom as he passed. It was then I decided I wanted to be her. The end.
ReplyDeleteLove the term "Zuckerberg'd them"

The older you get, the thinner the line between chic and crazy...What I love about NYC is that amazingly stylish older and even "elderly" women are still treating the street like their own catwalk and working it.
ReplyDeleteThis video gave me goosebumps!! I loved it. If I can be 1/3 that awesome when I'm older, life will be good.
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love kooky and original old ladies! My grandma was like that - totally into fashion until she passed.
ReplyDeletewww.thefoolishaesthete.blogspot.com
Even if you Zuckerberg'd the hell out of the man-repelling style, you still Zuckerberg pretty successfully.
ReplyDeleteDenim + Cotton
Now why don't I ever see any of these fashionistas on other street style blogs (excepting an occasional appearance by Iris Apfel)?
ReplyDeleteI can definitely see my future here and it looks like a whole lotta fun.
these are special women! x
ReplyDeleteI think you CAN look gorgeous without looking ridiculous when you hit 60... Some women are just trying too hard. But I do admire their courage.

The original Lady Gagas and Madonnas. I want one of those women to be my grandma. Heck, I'll take all of 'em!
ReplyDeletethis is fantastic! who says you need to succumb to dr. scholls and floral house dreses when you hit a certain age?
ReplyDeletei especially love the woman in the big black cow udders hat - "i dress for myself. if anyone doesn't like what i'm wearing, i don't give a shit."

welp, there are my first tears of the day!
ReplyDeleteget me an orange boa stat! :)
Ok, firstly, "If this doesn't get you excited to hit menopause, I don't know what will" made me laugh VERY hard. So hard that my doorman heard my howl (He called upstairs to make sure I wasn't hurt, and don't worry, I wasn't).
ReplyDeleteSecondly, These ladies that are profiled are the epitome of what I hope to be one day, thank you for sharing.
Thirdly, I think you might like to read my blog, and not because it's funny, and not because it's (sort of) about fashionistic tendencies, but because I'm sarcastic like you are http://jleiter.blogspot.com/
Thank you. Menopause can be the most Man-Repelling time of your life. The wild glasses are one major perk. I myself have tortise cat-eyes.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we Post-Meno's don a lot more clothes than we did in the Man-Inticing years. Hence=Layering upon layering. Good times ahead my young M.R.'s!
Seize the Day!
