Who Wore it Best: Frizz Biz

Leandra Medine | January 14, 2011

Last night I tweeted a photo of myselffollowed by a tag that read “Marc Jacob’s S/S 2011 runway models have nothing on me.”

But then I got to thinking about it. Self, I said to myself. you’re such a selfish Sally. This is a lot of self for but six words. Maybe they do have something on me. They were, after all, commissioned to walk Marc Jacobs’ show.
So now I do what anyone would do given the extenuating circumstances of this situation and leave it to you, funky felines, to observe and deliberate when I pose this question: Who Wore it Best?
Don’t ever say I don’t love you.
A little background about this image: it was taken by my hetero-life-mate, Arielle, during the first week of our semester abroad in Paris. The wattage in my blow dryer did not match the wattage that the French fuses took in my small white apartment so I was forced to rely on old fashioned hair taming products to neuter my head. As it turns out, French hair products are not equal to or greater than American hair products. I thought about using soul glow, but then I remembered that contrary to frequent thought, I am not in fact, Michael Jackson.
And in my favor re: the contest presented here…it should be noted that this shit is pre-product, au natural, genetic. No perm, no spray, no tease. Just you, me, a broken blow dryer and tangled hair brush.
Choose wisely, fellow Repellows.

Diane von Furstenberg x Charlotte Ronson x Turban x Leopard Print Fur Cuffs = The highlight of Monday

  • You are sooooo adorable!!!!!

I think your curly hair looks great! You should wear it au natural more often, though you are adorable either way.

  • Petra

I actually love your hair. It reminds me of those postcards of Edwardian actresses who rocked some serious frizz. Of course, they usually decorated their locks with flowers, rather than a hairbrush, but whatever…

  • You did. You look good either way, straight/frizzy… I wish I have big hair, but instead I have straight limp hair – so boring. I want poodle hair once in awhile 😉

AND btw niiiccee leopard print fur cuffs! I want one.

  • Love your natural hair!!!

  • i'm reading this post after having my hair blow dyed and brushed which lookes remarkably like your mane of frizz. i think man repelling first starts with our hair.

  • I've had that happen to me before and then someone had to cut the brush out of my hair….damn hair. Anyway you do look rather runwayish in it. Nice.

  • I have the same kind of hair as you! Not sure how I would survive w/out my styling tools.

  • I vote curly hair more often.

  • MR

You guys LIKE my hair? Wow, you really are Man Repellers! I'm a proud mama

LOVE the curly hair. and i am pretty sure most guys find curly untamed hair sexy. i have a friend with hair similar to yours and she always straightens it. one day she was wearing it curly (natural) and she got TONS of male attention. even my husband had to comment on how much hotter she was with curly hair. so perhaps keeping it straight is best for a Man Repeller! (though keeping the brush in the hair does counter the wild sexiness of the curly locks.:))

  • Danielle

I've been wondering if you had curly hair forever!!! I suspected. Your hair looks great either way.

the last pic of you poised on the edge of a chair looks like youre sitting on the can ….

(felt compelled to point that out.)

  • I'm not going to contribute to the natural vs. product hair, but I will say that no country knows hair products like Korea. The stuff they have available in this country specifically for hair astounds me. If you haven't discovered the miracle that's the volume magic straight perm, I recommend you hop on that train to Queens.

that last pic is so super adorable and i want those leopard cuffs! XO

  • I love your natural curly hair! I want your natural curly hair!
also love your take on fashion blogging, it's great 🙂

  • That last photo is so cute! And I love the curly hair, looks great!

PS The brush stuck in the hair? I know all about it…

  • I don't know about anybody else, but I'm fully stoked about that sneak peek. Those shoes…!

  • I actually like the curly hair too!

And you have seen my brother so you know that I too possess a serious jew fro. My hair makes your hair look tame.

  • Haha I had a similar experience in Paris. Which school were you at abroad? I was at Sciences Po. Your blog is hilarious and you are amaze.

  • no

no question no hesitation, you did. (it is the smile that makes all the difference).
    long live the jewfro.

  • You and I have the same hair type so of course I'm'a say you wore it better than that faux frizz on the MJ model.

  • You CRACK ME UP!!! Shout out to you on my blog today!

You kind of look like Maeby Fünke, so now you have to worry about repelling male cousins as well

  • Isn't curly hair terrible/wonderful! I think mine is only getting curlier as I get older, too! O woe is me.

  • I feel you on the curly hair frizz madness. Also, "hetero-life mate" is a term that I am incorporating into my permanent lexicon. So thank you for that! 🙂

  • The curly hair is pretty sexy. I have to give it to you considering that you earned yours without any aid from hair products. Can you imagine how many products are infused in the Marc Jacobs' models' hair??? You definitely have the advantage.

  • Hahahaha, funny! I think natural curls look better (so yours).
    And btw I don't like the collection…

That picture of you is so adorable!

  • Temo

As a Black woman with a huge big frizzy afro I am like wha?? Is there a problem?

I am letting my perm grow out and with perms you have dry, frizzy hair, so for a year I was not using Shielo products. Man I was missing out on soft silky hair.

Well I started to straighten it everyday and I wanted something to use before and after I straighten it. The Antioxidant Protectant from Shielo got great reviews on other websites. Just a spray goes a long way!

I have thick hair and it's a little past my shoulders and a spray is enough for me. I put some in my hair before I use my straightener and after I'm done to tame flyaways and lose the frizz. It leaves my hair so soft and shiny! I'm glad I tried this.
